1 year old inlet manifold failure

Hi, I had the dreaded restricted performance message last year, smoke tested and had both inlet manifolds replaced with the OEM versions in Aug 23.

Unfortunately I'm now getting restricted performance again with the same error codes. I was assuming it couldn't be the manifolds again but after another smoke test it looks to be the passenger side manifold is split.

I'll be contacting the garage but I was wondering if people had any thoughts if this is expected or suggests a clear defect in the part, and if so who should cover the 7-800 labour cost?

As the parts were from land rover I'm expecting those to be covered for 2 years, but I don't really want to just replace the broken one if I'm paying for labour.

Cheers

This is not the answer you want but the labour cost will be on you I'm afraid. LR warranty will only cover the replacement part and unless you can prove the garage fitted them wrong in the first place - very unlikely over a year down the line - it's not their problem either.

(I'm assuming fitting was an Indy, not a main agent ?)

Thanks and yeah I was hoping they might but I was already thinking they probably wouldn't! It is an indy and as they're good I wouldn't try to get them to cover the cost - as you say I'm sure it was installed correctly.

Anyone have any thoughts on if I've just been incredibly unlucky or if a manifold failure within a year/5k miles is common?

We live on a hill so I'm sure that will put some pressure through it, but it's an expensive job if it's repeatedly going to happen.

Cheers

The question I would be asking, and I don't know the answer, is whether the OEM manifold is superior to the after-market alternative:-

Either way I think I would be inclined to do both sides concurrently.

Good luck

Lemonjelly - no harm in asking of course ! Maybe depends if you catch them in a good mood.

NJSS - I'm very interested in those too. I do my own spannering so if they fail and I need to buy OEM ones, the extra cost is small and mainly just my time, not £800+ at a garage ! I have these saved as a bookmark:

If you're not in a rush, ordering direct saves quite a lot of money.

My concern about AliExpress is having to pay import duty & VAT:-

You may be charged customs duties and taxes for something you bought on AliExpress because:
• Duties and taxes are typically not included in the price of the item, and might not be included in the overall shipping costs you pay to the seller.
• When shopping on AliExpress, you are buying from overseas sellers. That’s why sometimes you will be asked to pay customs duty.

The taxes may depend on where your order was sent from, the type of items you bought, their value and the weight of the package. Different countries may have different tax policies regarding specific products. It’s always best to confirm this with the seller or your local customs authority.

You are responsible to clear VAT on all purchases made on AliExpress. This can be done through the VAT clearance procedure of your local customs authority in your country of residence.

Oh yes, well aware of that, but I've bought from Aliexpress & from sellers in the US and never been charged.

In this case it should be:

( (125.19 + 38.70) + 4.5% duty ) + 20% VAT = £205.52

Or if you're lucky it might just be the 125.19 + 38.70 = £163.89

I live dangerously - we all do driving one of these 😂 - so personally I am comfortable with the uncertainty.

Probably more of a worry would be warranty. I doubt you'd have much luck there dealing direct with CN.

If the garage fitted genuine JLR manifolds, they are covered by a 2yr parts and labour warranty

It goes back to a main dealer, they confirm the failure, and if no external influences have caused it, the dealer will replace FOC Thumbs Up

Thanks all! Fingers crossed LR will cover it as they were genuine from them, and there isn't any reason I'm aware of why it should've failed.

I'll give my garage a ring tomorrow to try to sort.

I am putting my money where my mouth is - I've just ordered a pair of manifolds via Aliexpress. Very Happy They actually collect the VAT automatically - but not the duty, curiously. I will update my "My Discovery 4" thread in due course !

But if they are metal, how much worse than factory plastic ones can they be?

Kept hearing the same waffle in the 70's and 80's about 'Jap cr-p', and yet the Japanese decimated the British car, motorcycle and electronics industry as well as causing great upheaval in other countries industries.
The same Chinese now have the largest electric car products and I believe BYD overtook Tesla as the biggest electric car producer.
