10.1" Android 10 Head Unit install in glovebox - Videos |
|
So I wanted a large screen android unit in my car for navigating off-road.
I settled (after about 16 hours of research) on a Joying 10.1" unit.
It has 6GB ram, 128GB storage, lots of connectivity and the best thing is you can order a 1-meter screen extension cable.
The head unit is located in the upper glovebox, hard-wired to the AUX directly on the back of the factory head unit, and the display sits in front of the Nav Screen.
I will post up photos of the full install on my build thread tomorrow, but for now here's 2 vids:
The videos are detailed. If you are looking for short 5 min vids, these will not satisfy you. If you care about attention to detail you will like these vids.

most cars don't have the light wire at the radio. (pin 17)
Only your preproduction model.
Illumination status can be seen over the CAN that's why.
The cigar ligher (best) or the LCD display have it
Airbag light was on, as the switch panel was disconnected

Ah interesting PeteK. I wonder why the illumination wire was removed.
I was originally planning to take it from the 12v socket, but was lucky
Yup, airbag light reset after I reconnected everything... I wasnt too worried about it

Thanks for the kind words LeroyMusic & TimmyT Pre-Production

Fantastic piece of work - thank you. Can I ask why you chose this unit over the other Android tablets that others have installed?
Could you post links through to the documentation you referenced too?
Thanks again,

There were many reasons why I chose this unit, and not others, will try to list here:
- Joying is a reasonably reputable manufacturer in the space. Other large names include Pumpkin and Teyes (other than the normal Alpine, Kenwood & Sony).
- The device is using a new chipset, which means better performance and support for longer. (Older chips are usually already pushed to their limits)
- It is an 8 core CPU - better performance when multitasking or running multiple apps.
- As standard, it has 4GB memory, which helps with multitasking and running lots of apps. I upgraded to 6GB Memory.
- It has 5GHz (and 2.4GHz) WiFi - where most only have 2.4GHz. 5GHz is better speed with good line of sight. 2.4GHz is better at a longer distance through obstacles (walls etc).
- It has industry-standard connectors (SMA) for GPS and 4G. Some manufacturers have them soldered in, or some use some other random things. Using SMA I can always upgrade the antennas to something more powerful.
- Not useful for me - but it has Wireless Apple Car Play, and Wired Android Auto included.
- There are lots of Audio Output Options making installation much easier in Disco (Sub Output, Front 2x RCA, Rear 2x RCA, Optical Out, and standard Amplified ISO)
- The OS is Android 10, so more future apps will support it. (But its a hacked together version of older android)
- The display can be mounted away from the head unit. Most others do not offer this, and even the ones that have a similar cable dont specify this. You could buy and test yourself, but risk discovering the factory cable was a twisted type meaning that Pin 1 on one end might be Pin 15 on the other, thus blowing the display.
- Super Bright Display - most others suffer under direct sunlight. I am happy to report this one is still readable.
I think that covers it
I did very strongly consider just putting in an android tablet, or even building my own custom system using a Rasberry Pi.
But that was too much headache.
I will be making a video on what and why I went for this vs other options.
The documentation can all be found on here. I think most of it is copyrighted material, so I dont think im allowed to post a copy of it.
But I can make my own list of pins and cables....[/list] Pre-Production
