cheers for the further replies. I will be putting some Cooper HT+ on tomorrow (as I found out they are just around the corner 8) and provide an excellent service). will source some 17" later for bush bashing and use the 18" for graded gravel and tar. a recent puncture has left me high and dry so was looking for an offroad set that can be swapped and not stop me from using the D3 on a day to day basis.
a brother has the STT's although I might try the suggested BFG's as a comparison when funds allow.

HT+ have been sooooooooo much better than the Wranglers. Everytime I went out Oberon way I would get a puncture. The wheel wobble has been looked at multiple times by both dealer and tyre place, I have had multiple wheel alignments, they have replaced a bunch of the front end steering/suspension components, and while they have reduced it, it's still there. When I swap back to the STT's it's gone. I am sure there is some 'absorbing' of vibration by the taller sidewalls of the STT, but it's like night and day.
Replaced the Zero's with ContiCrossContact UHP and the wobble has gone. Was the Zero after all. New MY15 TDv6 D4 in Buckingham Blue

We have a Disco3, 3year old, which we use for gold prospecting throughout WA. Have been in some very rough country. we also spend 2 months on the beach with tyres let down to 16 psi.
have been using goodyear wranglers silent armour 265 60R18 which work well on sand but we have had a few problems when moving over very heavily quartzed ground with 2 side wall punctures. tyres have been operating at 28psi in this type of country. has anyone fitted a bigger tyre? any comments on method of use in heavily quartzed country? the tyres have worn well, and work well on "the black"

Many different opinions on tyre pressures. I normally run mine at 22 to 24psi on rocky ground like Bridle Track and Hampton State forest that both have quartz and so far no sidewall damage. However it is a bit of a lucky dip in quartz country because if you hit a rock the wrong way they are like a razor and will slice through the sidewalls. Too much pressure though increases the chances of that happening. Take the road less traveled. I have recently fitted 285/60/18 cooper ltz's to my big brake D4. They will give the extra floatation needed for sand and they are quiet on bitumen and drive well. Cannot comment on performance on shale/rock etc as yet but Gordon at "Green Oval Experience" down your way in Perth should be able to shed more light on this subject including the option of 275/65/18 bighorns etc.
A slight rub on the chassis at full lock is the only down side of using such a large tyre but for me the possitives outweigh the negatives. Gordon can also supply ride height sensor rods that can alleviate this issue. Check his posts on this site (& RRSPORT.com) at "disco4x4aus"

Hi Catweasel.
I'm still pretty happy w the 265x65x18 BFG's, up to 50K now and a bit over half worn. They've got a few lugs ripped out where Iwent rock climbing in the Vic high plains and forgot to lower the pressures (still showed up some of the modified Landcruisers on the day though). Slight rub on full lock is the only downside.
BTW, what are you up to at Bundaleer? Wanted to go to the concert in the forest this year, but I don't think it's going to work out timing wise.
