United Kingdom 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Unknown ColourDiscovery 3
18 or 19

Hi all. Only had my D3 3 months. It has a pair of same make on front and a different make but a pair on back. Both seem not very worn but have worn evenly. End of May I am travelling up to Scotland from just above London. Ideally I want to save and get all 4 corners the same before I go.

I see alot of people running 19s but mine are 255/60r18.

My questions are: are 19s worth an upgrade? Do they change speedo much? Also I see the Scorpians are alot of people choice for road use. I rarely go off road but might do on odd occasion during harvest. Would they be the best to save for?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Welcome Stupot70

Opinions differ - there are those of us, myself included, who would consider changing from 18" to 19" a downgrade.

On my D3, which I owned for some 8 years, and on my D4 I have always fitted the smallest diameter wheel which fits over the brakes, thus getting higher side-walls on the tyres & a more comfortable ride, and better off-road performance.

When I bought my D3 & the later D4 they came with large wheels, so I have experience of driving with them, and later changing to smaller wheels. I am convinced that smaller wheels are preferable.

Speedo calibration is a matter of rolling radius - see here:-

https://tiresize.com/speedometer-calibration/

If you do change to a non-standard tyre it's advisable to get clearance from your insurers.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. So 18s aren't all that bad. I love the ride jsut would prefer all 4 corners the same. I think the previous owners put budget ish brand on (Jinyu?) but they are pretty quiet about £60 ish I think

All the original fit wheels with original fit tyres give virtually the same rolling radius . so speedo not affected . None standard tyres would make some difference.

18” rims were my preferred choice on all my Disco’s. On the D3 you can fit the larger V8 brake discs and still run 18”s.

Perfect combination of ride comfort, handling and practically (almost impossible to kerb and lower cost tyres). As NJSS said, far superior for off road use.

Thanks everyone. Now what about choice of rubber? Save for Scorpians or is there something similar but not as expensive?

i would say 90/10 split road/off road. I imagine i might go off road during harvest but this year will be the first year.

The D3/4 is hugely capable off road on normal (m&s) road biased tyres.

Good price for the oe fit Scorpion Zero's;

I've not used these myself, but they're well rated and a premium brand:
