19 " vs 20" alloy wheels

Hi guys. Struggling to get some 19" wheels
At the moment I have 20" twin spoke 7
But bit difficult on tyre choice.
I have seen some on the bay but they need new tyres
My question is. Will the ride improve with 19 over 20
I don't do seriously off road mainly road.
20" feels fine just wondering if I'm missing out.
Should I stick to 20 ?
Thanks peeps
Mike

I did exactly what you are looking to do very soon after I brought my D4 HSELux.

I don't really like the look of the original 20" wheels anyway, I don't like the Silver bits, and think 19" suits a D4 better.
But it was like you also about tyre choice.

I ended up buying a set of genuine LR wheels from a company in London that Powdercoated them Black, fitted pressure sensors and new Avon AX7 tyres.

It was a big cost, at from memory @Ā£1800, but in reality with the cost of the sensors and tyres wasn't that much for the actual wheels.
I can't find the details of who I brought them from at the moment.

I haven't noticed any difference in ride quality, but feel I have a better choice of tyres at better costs and the D4 looks a lot better.

Truly, the air suspension does much to mask the ride comfort of the lower profile tires.
But I have the 19s. I prefer the higher sidewall and the comfort in knowing that where I drive Iā€™m in a reduced risk of hurting the rims. And I have the flexibility to lower the tire pressures, if needed.

I went with 20" on both of my cars with 255 55 20 tyres on them both - gives the increased sidewall as well as "looking right" in the wheel wells of the Discovery

I've run 275x22x45 for the last 6years in summer without rubbing, 255x55x19 in winter, the 19 definitely give a smoother ride particularly over potholes but not a tremendous difference and not worth arguing about.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

We are currently running two D4s, one with 19" rims and the other with 20". (We also have a D3 with 18" rims but that is currently 'laid up' with 298k on the clock)

I think the reality is that the condition of the suspension has far greater influence on ride 'stiffness' than a nominal 5mm in tyre wall height.

In our case, the D4 with the 19" rims has done only 80k and gives a much firmer ride (and corners better) than the older vehicle fitted with the 20" rims which has covered more than 160k. That isn't to say the older vehicle is a dog - it is just inevitable that however well they are maintained a vehicle with twice the mileage will feel softer as components wear.

All of that of course assumes correct and even tyre pressures............

Previously:

300TDi Disco 1 (289k)
4 RR Classics (300-350k each, 2 manual, 2 auto)
110 V8 CSW (220k)
S3 109 hi cap pickup (ex RN)
S2A 88 Safari SW with lpg conversion (bloody lethal)
