2 Jags...

Got 2 jags on my drive this afternoon. 8)

D4 has gone in for service and got loaned an XF Luxury as courtesy car. Its the small diesel engine version, and as well as been a nice place to be, It really shifts!

The thing is, to my mind it needs more cylinders. Its very obviously a 4 cylinder oil burner.

Now I know these are bought by many as a company car, or fleet car where economy is the priority, but I'm thinking that they must be able to use some of the exhaust/engine sound tuning skills they have gained with the F Type, and make a 4 cylinder thumper sound a bit more entertaining. Its not intrusive, or annoying, but its just not exciting, it has no character in its voice, it just whirrs away.

I guess most of us generally associate increased luxury with an increase in cylinders and capacity, but I guess economy and road tax win out in the end, even for many private purchasers.

Sadly no photos (so clearly it never happened), but whilst visiting the its broken department at my dealer twice yesterday, on the second visit the XE in the showroom was uncovered.

I have to say I really liked it, although the sunroof looked a bit of an odd affair in the way it went over the roof and put up some basket effect around the leading edge.

There was also the not so small matter of it being £42,000! Also for only 4 cylinders.

A 3 pot sounds better than a 4 pot IMO. Toms UP! and Johnnys Skoda sound pretty cool when pushed.

Having run company cars until recently, having emissions under 129g makes all the difference to the tax situation for the company as well as the individual user. This is the immediate future, until the goal posts are moved yet again and we'll be driving hybrids. Most company car drivers that are looking for a new BMW/Audi/Merc (or the lucky few who can upgrade to something half decent, like a Jag) will be looking for ultra low emissions and acceptable performance from something that's also smooth and quiet. I'm not sure something that sounds like it should be a performance car, but isn't, will fit the bill.

That sunroof is similar to the one in the FL2. The "basket affair" works really well at removing all buffeting and catching a fair bit of water too if you hit a puddle! And, I'm really pleased to hear that it can be opened - this fad for sealed glass roofs does absolutely nothing for me Sad
 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

I did notice the netting in the basket type thing around the XE sunroof looked very much like the wind deflector in a convertible, so I am sure it will do an equally good job at stopping the buffeting, although never thought of it as being water repellent!

As for the sunroof it was certainly big and when open it overhung the roof. It was about an £1,100 extra though on the model in the showroom.
