Hi all , I'm new to the forum and not the most technically minded. I've got a Discover Question y 4. New battery on, new starter motor and new relay. Still nothing when trying to start. Power is getting to the starter. Virtually stand on brake pedal, press start button, nothing at all. Any clues

Hi and welcome,

There are many possibilities some simple including earth straps and others somewhat more complicated. As has already been pointed out, having the diagnostic codes read is the usual first step when a fault occurs as this points the direction of the fault if not leading directly to it.

In the meantime you could check the earth straps and that the webbing is not holding any corrosion or have broken. A simple non invasive test of the straps is to use a good quality jump lead. One end should be placed on to a clean metal bracket or bolt on the engine, and the other to the Neg (-) side of the battery.
Then try a start, if it starts or if there's any improvement in symptoms this will confirm one or more earth strap failure!!

A regular culprit is the one from the chassis rail in the O/S/F wheel arch (liner has to be removed or at least pulled back out of the way) to the O/S engine mounting.

If you are going to run one of these vehicles you will need a diagnostic tool (GAP IID et al) is highly recommended on here. Thumbs Up

Plenty diesel in the tank? Sounds a daft question, but if too low, won't turn over, especially if it's been on ramps.

Will the ignition come on (i.e. start button with no brake pedal?) or is the whole thing dead

Why fit a new starter motor, did you buy it as a non-runner?

New battery, starter and relay suggests fixing poor turn-over rate was being looked at ? So earthstrap looks favourite to me.
