I've found no difference in mpg between supermarket and branded fuel. Of course, they all come from the same refineries so at the most only the additives vary. Others have found a small increase in mpg when using premium fuels.
I use Road Trip Lite (the free version) on my iPhone. The free version does nothing but mpg calculations and price, but the simplicity suits me. It currently shows my rolling 3 tank average as over 30 mpg, my best tank at 31.27 mpg and my average since brand new of 28.8 mpg. This is all using supermarket fuel:

Like Robbie I have found not difference what so ever between supermarket fuels and premium brands and having used supermarket fuels for a number of years in a number of vehicles never had any other ill effects.

I use "FuelLog" (Android) and get the following data for the first 2800 km (aprox. 80% motorways) for our D4 (SDV6, 256 PS): average 12.27 l/100km (= 22.98 mpg) (min. 10.77 (= 26.18 mpg), max. 12.94 (= 21.79 mpg)).
Due to the fact that it's a new car, I didn't really challenge it and drove most of the time alternating between 120 and 150 km/h.

I am getting 31mpg on the run and 27 around town. I am pretty happy with that to be honest.D4 HSE all the way

2013 D4 Fuel Consumption
I just swapped my 2007 D3 for a 2012 D4. Towards the end my D3 duel consumption took a dive for some unexplained reason and I put in BP Ultimate for the first time ever (previously Tesco or Morrisons) and got an immediate 2-3 mpg improvement. So far I am getting 26-27 with the D4, mainly on motorway/duel carriageway at +/- 80 steady, measured full-full using the iPhone fuelcalc app. The trip computer is showing 30 mpg but it is lying. I am still using BP ultimate.

Doing a solid 27 actual MPG (not dash) based on the 90 odd quid I put in yesterday. Not bad. But with winter coming it'll be down 25 and under with the FBH kicking in.

D4 is now 2 months old and has 5000km. Around town 26mpg. Touring with our 1 tonne off-road camper,best 28 mpg, worst 22.5 mpg. The last was a mix of hilly country and motorway. I'm very happy with that.

I tend to average a true 28-30mpg on a mix of urban and rural drving. However, the best I have achieved on a brim-to-brim test was 34mpg (40.1mpg on the fuel computer ) over about 593 miles using 80 litres. This required a very light foot tbough and is therefore unlikely to occur again!
Incidentally, towing a 3,000Kg boat / trailer on various motorways has achieved only around 17-21mpg.

Clearly the FBH does use fuel but it is not the villain in the piece. To be efficient the diesel fuel needs to be atomised and at the correct ratio. The injectors do a good job in achieving this but at cold temps part of the fuel charge condenses on the cylinder walls. To compensate for this loss the injectors squirt more in and the plugs help with afterglow; this increases fuel used per charge until the engine becomes warm. The poor old FBH is trying to help.

How in HEAVENS name can I get my D4 consumption to get close to yours?? I have a bad stop start morning drive to office and speed in South Africa is higher than in the UK, plus I have the LR roofrack on permanently but my consumption is just CRAZY compared to you guys!! What can I do or ask at the next service? Its a 2010 3.0 SDv6 HSE by the way

Last tankful on a variety of town and motorway driving ( driven sensibly ) the trip computer showed 29.3 mpg, the actual was 26.7, making the computer around ten percent optimistic. That said, its a big old bus and I've been in plenty more economical cars that disappoint more at the petrol station All that I Pay my Psychiatrist is the price of Feed and Hay.....and he listens to me All Day

Ok now I'm concerned. My computer says I'm getting an average of 17.2 mpg. All my driving is city based but it's not being thrashed at all. Does this seem odd?

My dash said 36 mpg and I cruised at 70 for most of the tank. Fantastic I thought When I checked it brim to brim 23.7 optomistic marketing tool I think. I get the same out of the Landcruiser and that does not break down on a weekly basis.
