2.7 tsv6 oil pump seal

Guys, a few months ago I replaced the oil pump and belts etc on my Disco.

Yesterday I gave it an Italian Tune Up, (I do this, normally around once a month) then on the 7 mile journey home I was getting the dreaded bong and a very faint flash of the oil light.

No power loss or smoke, so I kept on going.
Once home I immediately noticed a bad oil leak, from the front of the lump.

My first thought was the crank oil/pump seal.

I replaced this with the Victor Reinz seal (only because it comes with a crank fitting tool.) from Advanced Factors.

So today I stripped her down again and sure enough, the seal has popped out(see photo)....I fitted it bone dry and was very careful.

I’m now wondering why it’s popped out.... too much internal pressure I’m guessing, buy why?

Tia

I've had this a few times, using VR seals

Changed to genuine, never had an issue since...

I didn’t knock it in, I wound it in with the crank bolt using a8 large socket.

I’ll be fitting an LR seal tomorrow, just hope it hasn’t suffered any damage by running on low oil.

Does anyone have a link to the oil seal fitter? I’m not sure of the part number or best place to buy one?

I read somewhere that this happens if the seal is installed too deep and seals off a hole.

The new style pumps have three tabs inside that stop the seal going to far in when fitting it. The seal has to be fitted square on to the crankshaft, if you twist them to far they will leak.

I know DM says he has had some of the VR seals leak and pop out, but I have fitted hundreds of them and only ever had one leak, and that was my fault by twisting it to much.

All Put back together today with new LR seal, crank bolt and tensioner bolt.

When I emptied the sump only around 2 litres was left......

The oil pump squealed on start up and then once took some Magnatec in, became silent again.....so all good.

No leaks after test drive and the engine is quiet.

Happy days.....now to fix the other one.

It happened to me with a VR seal 12 months ago at second belt change - bloody nuisance, almost terminal. I glued the replacement in place
