The advantage of the OEM battery boxes is that it stops the batterie getting too hot. A battey in the engine bay where the FBH would be gets cooked very quickly.

If you want a standard fitment the best option is to fit an optima battery in the aux batt compartment. This gets you the best capacity:space ratio
You can use the space in front of the main batt, but as caver says, you would need to insulate the area, which would not be hugely difficult. I think some chaps have used this space for this purpose. You also don't have space for much more than you can fit in the aux box anyway. In the D4 this aux batt space is used for something else Sad
There is always the option of the portable aux battery like you can buy in 4x4megaworld etc.
I suggest always use a battery controller

Hi , who stocks Optima batteries in SA.
Re. The aux. battary, can you take earth straight from the earth nut in the aux bat. tray compartment. Will it have enough earth ?
