4 pot or 6?

Hi all

Well I never thought that I would say this but after reading everything available about the new Disco and the engine line up I think that if I were to go for one it would be the 4 cylinder Ingenium engine variant.

What are folks thoughts?

6 pot when towing a big TA caravan I want the power without having to rev the nuts out of the poor little engine

I think most people will buy the 4 pot. Many will live to regret it.

I've driven examples of these engines and they are nice enough, but they can't hold a candle to the V6 - and that's when they fitted to much lighter & smaller XE's and the smaller of the two Disco Sports.

V6 for me, when spending over £50k the £1.5k extra for the V6 is meaningless. I discussed it with my salesman and we both agreed, the 2.0 ain't cheap enough.

I've yet to see the car so I may not need to worry about engine choice. I'm not too keen on its out of proportion rear end and this p Censored s flap that LR has created may be the killer for me.

I wonder. Most Discos don't tow, I'd say. Most are just 4 wheel drive MPVs and used as such the 2.0 will make a lot of sense. When sat on the motorway they'll get decent mpg and on an interesting road, the lighter front end should make for a more enjoyable drive. For general pottering about dropping little Jocasta at ballet lessons, the 2.0 will be an excellent choice.

I was forgetting that the buyer for this new car is likely to be very different to the customer base that the Disco 4 sells into. As it morphs into a more regular MPV, to compete more directly with the likes of the XC90 and the X5, the 2.0 litre may be all that many of its new customers need.

Those that truly need the capabilities of the D4, or those don't (but buy it simply because they feel happier buying "the real deal"), are just as likely to be looking elsewhere anyway.

As with the Disco Sport,, the engine replacement cycle is out of line with the model launch cycle.

In answer to the question I would not buy the four pot but the six pot is underpowered in a relative sense. Therefore, for me, the easy decision is to run my D4 from three to five years old and get a new six cylinder engine variant in spring 2019 which - hopefully - will have more power etc. Thanks LR for saving me some cash.

The 3.0TD is effectively more powerful in the D5 than the D4 because the D5 is lighter. Whilst not the best metric for engine performance, the 0-60 time drops to under 8s using the same engine. Will LR put the RRS's 300+bhp V6 TD lump in the D5? That would make the V6 petrol somewhat redundant in terms of being the performance engine.

Indeed, with RRS performance and similar on road behaviour, the D5 might make the RRS redundant too. Not sure LR would want to do that.

To my mind the point is not the reduced weight equals more performance but the fact that there needs to be more clear air between the 4 and 6 cylinder engines in output.

If you purely judge power output in terms of peak BHP you'd be right, but it's a virtually meaningless figure.

That is true as the bigger engine will have a much broader spread of power and a more appealing low end torque curve. That's half the reason I don't want the 4 but I would still prefer a larger performance differential and doing something silly like putting the 180PS version of the 4 pot would not work. The current 6 is clearly a stop gap for a period of time.

Indeed, Land Rover are expecting D4 owners to switch to the D5 or the new Defender depending on their requirements.

They have said that is the only way they can justify developing a new Defender is if they can increase the volume of sales.

Trouble is the new Defender does not exist yet, leaving D4 owners with that kind of requirement with no option today ( at least from Land Rover ).

Of course Defender owners will be then be complaining that it has gone all soft and LR have forgotten their existing owners!
