Having had a 6spd and now an 8spd, I kept reading on here that the 8spd was hugely better, and I have to disagree. Yes, it's a nicer box, but the 6spd is lovely and I wouldn't let the 6/8spd influence me into buying or not buying a car, if you find a decent 6spd at the right price and the only thing putting you off is the box, I would go for it.

M3DPO interesting post and funnily enough exactly where I am. I have a 55 plate HSE 2.7 and has just done 128k. I need something to tow a horse box, carry 7 people, cope with Scottish weather and also take a family of 4 to the Vendee every summer. Only car I can find that will work is the D4. But and a big but is the number of reported issues on the crank. If I could get insurance to cover it then may be tempted but I think I am better off with the D3. Drives great, everything works (bar sunroof) but we never use that anyway. Will need the belts again and probably a new oil pump at the same time but think I would be better off with what I know. Did think about a Defender but wife isn’t keen and 18 hour drive to France wouldn’t be much fun. If the D4 was reliable or LR cover the crap design with full engine replacement then i would buy one tomorrow. But they seemingly aren’t that bothered to look after their customers.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

What about a petrol D4? Sure, they’re rare as unicorns in Europe but both engines are considered rather reliable.

Some interesting points here, I appreciate them all.
I like my 3 but it is starting to feel very dated inside now, I am happy with the 3 to a degree but it’s an early 54 plate and I think I would begrudge putting serious money into it if anything substantial went wrong because at the end of the day it will still be a 14/15 yeah old car with north of 150k on it, ok it might have a new TC, gearbox or engine in it but everything will still be 14/15 years old and need attention.
I was all set for looking for an 8 speed 4 but with my budget I’d be scraping the barrrel a bit and the whole electrical gear selector does put me off a little, especially as I’ve seen quite a few horror stories lately of the selectors playing up. I like the idea of the 6 speed still being a mechanical connection from the stick to the box.
I’m never going to be off roading in the car, I’ve got no shame in admitting I own one because I can’t think of a safer 7 seater for the family, at most it may pull a caravan if I decide to go that way.
With regards the whole crank debate, I understand where people are coming from and their cautiousness but, for me it’s not enough to put me off purchasing one (tempted karma there). When we are all on forums and specialist pages we are more aware of the pitfalls of our vehicles but there will be 1000’s of landrovers out there without any issues that we don’t hear about, not every landrover owner frequents forums etc.
Am I right in thinking after all this reading that the 3.0tdv6 is the same engine as the 3.0sdv6 minus 10bhp and a few more mpg?

I agree with this. I love my 6 speed, less gear changes

Just an aside - I had a 2011 SDV6 which was a six speed so not all six speeds were TDV6. Mine was a March 2011 vehicle so I guess Landrover were doing their MY11.5 changes.

My view. I own the 2010 3.0L HSE with the “TDV6” which is twin turbo full power, before they dropped the 2.7 and made two 3.0L variants. It has the 6 speed.
While I cannot comment on the 8 speed as I’ve not owned it, I never find mine missing a gear, labouring in gears etc. With so much torque it just works. It never hunts, labours, jumps gears.
I’d say that you should be assured both will do the job admirably and let your budget dictate to you. You won’t be unhappy either way. Bear in mind you’ll need all the spare cash you can to replace the intake manifolds, throttle body, door locks, rear door actuator, front diff, EGRs, um, did I miss something? So yeah, the gearbox will be the least of your concerns in due course 😂
My advice, no matter what you buy, please have the fluid changed in the gearbox using genuine fluid. They’ll run forever if the oil is kept fresh.

Hmmmm, my oil was changed 3 times before 100k miles was reached when it was diagnosed new TC was needed!
If going for a 6 speed any sign of judder at around 27mph uphill is the first sign a failing TC, £3kish to rectify! The 6 speed GB is good the difference in driving is negligible, but the 8 speed is unquestionably stronger more reliable due to better design has less internal parts, the California stop syndrome is not an issue, but you do not get a proper gear lever, just s silly knob It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

It’s exactly the same engine, just badges differently. The power is the same if it’s a 2011 SDV6 with a 6 speed box. It will only have the extra 10hp if it’s got the 8 speed.
Basically, any 3.0 in the UK (except commercials) will all be the same if they are 6 speed, regardless of what they are badged as. The SDV6 will probably have a DPF and be Euro5, the 3.0l TDV6 badged cars don’t usually have a DPF and usually Euro 4.

Good advice from DiscoJeffster.
I'd add a few more of the more "features" I have experienced - crank position sensor failure (gearbox out job), Leaking rear cam seal (in my case body off and 13 hours labour) and a failed suspension compressor.
Having said that they are fantastic vehicles and hard to replace with anything that is as capable so if you can get a good one I'd say go for it.
