ABS cutting in when raised |
|
Hi, I have a problem with my 2006 2.7 Disco 3 ABS. Whenever I raise the car and touch the steering the ABS comes on the front right wheel. It doesnt do it when the car is lowered, and drives ok.
I dont think it is the steering angle sensor as I would imagine that would happen raised or lowered, nor do I think its the ABS sensor as it only does it when raised and I have already replaced the front right sensor with no change. All tyres are good but the suspension pump is slow (but gets there) and it has a brand new battery on it.
Apart from this being infuriating, it is a deadly fault as I had a steering angle sensor play up a couple of years ago which decided to lock the front wheels at 40mph on a bypass! Damn near had me in a hedge. I dont trust the car at all now and the brake coming on again and locking a wheel makes me really nervous about driving it.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

yup, tried that... no joy.
The abs and off road mode warning lights come on when it does it and the car lowers itself to normal(!) height, then drives ok.
I was wondering if the tracking was off slightly would that upset some sensor or other and set it off?

Anything stuck? Not an expert but Could be the lead to the abs on one of the wheels come adrift and is being pulled when you raise the car, warning and lowering may be because it loses contact when raised so deems it unsafe to drive and lowers? Maybe the cable to the wheel speed sensor? Apparently goes live as soon as the ignition is on and constantly tests even when stationary.
May be with having a look at the abs document in the forum wiki

Thanks, I did consider that and looked at them all... took them all out and cleaned the wheel abs teeth too. I will check out the links you sent and see if there is anything in there that I have missed.
I am still leaning towards something to do with the tracking though... but having said that it seems to be getting worse, today there was a hint of it when lowered too which would sort of rule out a mechanical cause

Check your wheel bearing, could be the tracking if the camber is on the edge of tolerance .

I will check them out but there is no knocking from any of them. The OSF wheel does not feel like it freely rotates though, not sure if its a touch of pad binding or a bearing issue, I will check it out at the weekend.
The DSC/ABS circut looks horrendously complicated with sensors averywhere! I didnt know about the yaw sensor... I wondered if it could be that but I guess that would activate both front brakes, not just the one... or would it!!!

Still having issues.... basically when I turn off the DSC the warning light is orange, with the car lowered the front OS brake jabs on for 10 seconds or so and I need to drive through it, then the ABS warning light comes on and it stops braking. I can then drive ok... as soon as I turn the ignition off though I need to do it again.
If I try the same thing with the car raised it is much worse and the same wheel locks, I cant drive through it and the ABS warning light doesnt come on... so I cant move it! I have to lower the car and floor it in 1st gear to get the ABS warning light to come on and disengage the brake.
Any thoughts???

Have you had water inside the car or done an engine wash. Either way I would check all the connections associated with the RH wheel.

Nope... its just odd as hell that its worse when jacked up, almost as if a wire is pulling somewhere (which it isnt). To put the icing on the cake no garages around my neck of the woods will touch it as they are terrified of the number of sensors and wierd crap that it does! 'Impossible to diagnose' is what the local 4x4 specialist said.

I had issues that were caused by a crack in the insulation on an ABS lead.
It wasn't broken and wasn't rubbing on anything, it just allowed moisture in and only became apparent when the suspension forced the lead to take a different route.

I had that thought too so swapped the front sensors round... NS to OS... same problem, the brake was still coming on the OSF wheel mainly when raised. Having said that though, I think I will buy a new one anyhow to double check and rule it out once and for all.
My understanding of this is that the HDC is taking over and thinking that a wheel is going faster than the other, when the car decides there is a problem and the ABS warning light comes on it is disengaged and drives... though all off road modes are also disabled and it lowers itself.

Have you had any codes read, that should narrow it down.

No, not yet. When I had it MOT'd a month ago the garage said the rear wheel sensor was playing up but I dont think that was from a code reader... especially since the problem is with the front... would a dodgy rear sensor cause the front brake to appply?
