Accelerator Pedal

I've just discovered that my Accelerator Pedal moves smoothly up and down till it reaches a point just above the bottom of it's travel. Then there is resistance to pressure, and until you give it a good push it won't move down. I had thought it was the mat catching it but I removed that when I got home and still it was 'sticking' rather than move from one end of its travel to the other.

Is this a design feature that everyone has, or just a special feature on my D3 Question

Not noticed it on mine, so maybe an extra only you have got. Speaking of mats trapping pedals - get this - the wife came to me last week saying that her freelander was difficult to get into gear all of a sudden, so I went out to check it and discovered that the mat had become lodged under the clutch pedal. Not noticed it on mine, there again dont think I've ever pushed it that far down. Perhaps it's to stop you putting your foot down into the lots of burning fuel but no more go zone

I think it's mentioned in the manual. It's supposed to be a point where it clicks (on auto transmissions) and shifts down a couple of gears to accelerate faster. Too bad it takes ages to shift there.

My is a Manual, though it wouldn't suprise me that it was fitted with an Automatic's Accelerator Pedal Smile

As the whole thing is fly by wire, it sounds like it is snagging on something......mine is completely smooth.

Best I take a good look at this then to find out why it appears to have a sticking point - think I'll wait until daylight though.

Okay Coffeecup, I can confirm mine does what you describe. How I know is that my D3 is in the shop at the moment with a couple of problems one is a loss of power while cruising up hills at 100kph (about 60mph). I pushed the pedal as far a I could to accelerate but nothing happens. The pedal goes smoothly up and down then gets very tight at the bottom of the travel and then clicks when pushed really hard down.

Mines an auto.

So it looks like a design feature for Autos, but not for Manuals... like mine. Called by the dealership today on the way home and the general opinion was that is should be smooth all the way. They will look at it when they have the car for two days to check out why it sinks when left standing for a few hours (see other thread).

I thought it was quite normal for autos to have the kick down BMWs certainly do and I'm pretty sure Mercs do too

An automatic, has at the end of its accellerator travel a pressure point. Once reached a little extra pressure kicks in the auto gear change to go down a gear or 2 at your choosing.

The way to find out, is simply to drive the car at about 50mph on a level road take your foot off the gas slightly and cruise a few metres, then stab your foot to the ground quite hard beyond the pressure, the gears will snap down, the revs will increase and you should be away quite smartly.
