Go for the locking diff if you can afford it. It's amazing just how deep snow the standard set up will get you through but less dramatic with the diff.
Not had a chance to try the D4 in snow [only got in May] but have had all the diffs locked up on steep muddy section and definately made a difference compared to the D3 without so expecting similar in the snow.
Changing the tyres from road to snow or AT's are possible the singular biggest difference you can make and whilst the traction control may get you there with the standard tyres it will be a lot less dramatic and much easier with snow or AT's fitted. Standard road tyres are fine for chelsea tractors but I'm in the mud weekly and makes a big difference.

The course at West Country LRE was mostly loose gravel/stones, and a little mud/wading. I was amazed at what the D4 could do with only stock tyres and an active rear diff.D4 HSE, Active Rear Diff, surround cameras, adaptive xenons, heated steering wheel, TPMS, remote park heating, centre console cooler box

I dont think LR can refit it (or the dealers are not allowed to) - but some has and many will.
I wouldnt want to get it done on a new vehicle though, you can imagine the warranty conversation if there was ever a problem with anything Driveline related.Duncan
