Active rear locking differential
I saw this as an option in the catalog.
Is this an electronic differential or mechanic? Is of any benefit, considering that the existing system emulates the role of a locking differential?

I think it would be best to describe it as an electronically controlled, mechanically acting, variably locking active rear diff....
I think the short answer would be that it's worth it if you're going to do serious off-road work in your new D3.
If you don't tick the options box, then don't worry about it...the common census is that a standard D3 will get to the same places as an active-diff equiped D3 - it just might take a bit longer and make a few more traction control noises to get there.
Saying all this, would I get one if I bought a new D3? Absolutely.....it would be one of the first options I would order....
Would I be upset if I bought a second-hand D3 without one? Not in the least....

It doesnt cost a lot (about £450 i think, so well worth it in the whole scheme of things). It will mean that you need a special build so will take about 3 months or so to get the vehicle as they dont seem to make any for stock with the active rear diff fitted.Duncan

Before I got mine I had an LRE taster day, and the instructor wnet through the car in detail, and showed the active diff on the TR screens. His recommendation was that if you occasionally off roaded, rather than spend £400 on decent off road tyres, get the active diff and stick with road tyres and you will rarely get stuck. If you are a serious off roader you will order it anyway!!
I can vouch from experience that on my 3/4 worn Wranglers on the Abingdon course I only failed one muddy climb (by basically being in the wrong position) and all the gizmos and diff locks got me through the entire course without any hitch.

Apart from the cost of the new diff, are the loom and connectors fitted if you want to retro fit or does it cost big time. ?
