Adaption

Hi

Hope everyone is keeping well , May i ask a daft question please , Have heard that for example u replace ur ATF oil and then best to wait for around 500 x miles before resetting the mechatronic adaptions so it’s not such a shock to the gearbox to have the oil and adaptions done at the same time

However heard that it can take roughly 250 miles for it to relearn, I assumed after them being reset it only takes considerably less distance for the mechatronic to relearn

I hadn’t heard your first comment.
I don’t think it’s true or for the reason you state. However it’s worth trying so you can clearly see the difference between old and new oil, on the same day

Resetting adaptions makes it shift badly for 3 days in my experience

If you read my post on LZ again you'll see it holds that approx amount in memory and use that info to adjust for the best shifts and driving style apparently. (Info from a transmission rebuild company).

When you clear the adaptions you dont have to drive 250miles for it to sort its self out, it will make changes from the first few shifts if it detects the need to. But after the full distance it will have done all the learning it can and then just keeps a rolling cycle going so it can change as the car does.

Personally it took my D3 about 20mins of driving to settle down after I had my transfusion style flush. Was very revvy for the first few miles then sorted its self out. It had 105k on it at the time and they said it still had the factory sump on so I think it's fair to assume its never been touched.

As always thanks so much for the fantastic information

Really like getting the vast range of knowledge from here and it’s really appreciated , did get 10 x litres of mannol AG55 some 2 x years ago, so think I better check the date on it

Do have a big concern and that’s the level plug as it looks like it’s never been undone ,along with it looks plastic , do have some fine small wire brush attachments for my dremel so wonder if that may be the best thing to slowly clean the area up as best as possible before attempting to undo it , pic below of the level plug

Mine has just turned to 100k , many thks as indeed will just drop the ATF oil then refill it following the procedure and temperature

Plus thinking due to the restrictions I have is to leave the plastic sump, mechatronic sleeve and rectangular seal alone until such times I can get a garage to do that for me

Regarding shelf life.
If you think the oil in the gearbox stays in there for a lifetime or ~10 years,
then why is a sealed oil bottle going to be less realistically ?

I think when oil goes off in a bottle, the sides are sucked in.


Regarding the level plug, have a good look round, and on the other side. It wouldn't surprise me if there is a second, for when they are fitted in a VW, Porsche, BMW etc.

EDIT: Only seams to be 1 level plug, looking at pics on ebay

Why didn’t I think of that , lol, that’s an extremely good point and convinced my current ATF oil is original

When I’m ready to use it I’ll pour some out into a clear dry container to ensure no water is present and that it’s still the sort of golden colour , bless u as always for that Bow down

Do have a hand pump which will screw onto a 1 x litre bottle , can just fill the bottles up to make it considerably more manageable

That’s a shame there’s only x 1 level plug , thks a million for ur time looking . Relooks like both filler and sump drain plugs are plastic so will see if there are metal replacements

On my 05 D3 (and still on the original sump / plugs) the fill plug is metal and the drain is plastic

IIRC the drain is only tightened to around 8Nm
 I see no ships........

Ah filler plug might be metal after all then, just looks like plastic, at least once I’ve cleaned it up should get a better idea

Then look at the FILO method (on here) where you pump oil back in at the front of car using a garden spray bottle.

When they changed mine over to a steel sump they fitted one without a drain plug. Kinda annoying, just means I'll have to use the filo method to change the oil at home.

Many thks and will have a another good read of that , will try my best to give it a good clean and try to see if it will loosen without to much force

Great that it’s metal so at least that gives me half a chance , plus with the drain plug only req 8Nm ( thks for the data spider ) I’ll have to get a small torque wrench , maybe a motorbike torque wrench would be suitable with it being such a low rating

If you remove that metal plug, oil will pour out.

You don’t need a TR for the plastic plug.
It has a kinda locking mechanism, so it will click a lot and turn and then just stop forcing it when it no longer wants to turn

That would just be my luck with oil down my sleeve Laughing , Just wish to crack it loose so I’ll then know what method I’ll need to follow

That’s brilliant, thks so much for telling me, so similar to the expansion bottle cap

Will be very interesting to see what condition / colour / quantity comes out
