Adjusting Headlamps and Spare Bulbs for French trip |
|
Getting very confused by lighting requirements for upcoming trip to France. I have a 2015 Disco 4 HSE with Xenon headlights. The handbook is a bit ambiguous (p49) in that it suggests that I can adjust for Euro travel from the car's setup menu - but seems that only applies if I have high beam assist (which I don't). Called dealers yesterday for guidance - they initially said I didn't need to do anything as I had 'flat top beam'. Then another called back to say it would need to be brought into their workshop to adjust - cost £78 (and presumably again afterwards to readjust)! So unless anyone can offer definitive guidance think I'm just going to put the old stick on Eurolite deflectors to be certain should I have to argue the toss with an interested gendarme.
Re spare bulbs - I went into the local Halfords yesterday to get a spare bulb kit. Told that they didn't do kits which incorporate HID Xenon bulbs. But told me that all the other spare bulbs for the car are pretty generic so worth just getting one of the cheapest kits in their range. Suggested a spare Xenon bulb would be £70 +. Don't think I need to have that! Does all this seem right?

from what I learned from trip last year ...
xenon bulbs are unlikely to fail BUT average continental cop checking you over will just want to see a spare bulb kit. so just buy a cheap one that looks the part ... although if you've also got LEDs everywhere, it won't be any use at all ... just so they can tick the box. .

On your model, you dont need to do anything to your headlamps for France, and you dont need to stick anything on the front of them either

Didn't think breathalyzer was legal requirement any more?
Same with Fire Extinguisher -its a recommended item but not sure is legal requirement. Have found that the AA list shown at ports is designed more to get you buying stuff!

SWMBO and I have been going to France since early 80,s. Never changed the lights. Remember Europe is an hour ahead us in time so it will be light until close on 22,oo hours. I also think that the Breathalyzer kits are no longer a requirement. One of the leading caravan clubs should be able to give the correct info

have a look here ... http://www.drive-france.com/
they caveat their list of "10 things you need" with
Quote:** Some very observant people will notice that there are in fact eleven things in the list there are two reasons for that. Firstly we have put breathalysers on the list because they are still officially listed as a legal requirement in French motoring law even though the French government have now decided not to issue fines to anyone who is caught driving without them in their vehicle.
so ... you "need" them but they can't fine you for not having them. might mean they just turn arsey with you ? for £5 from Halfrauds ... not worth the risk IMHO.
Not sure i'd go with the idea that you won't be driving in the dark. We got held up for hours at Mont Blanc tunnel and it was not only dark for last 2 hours driving but we missed "last orders" for food at the village we went to. Still got beers though, so not a total disaster .

Never bothered with fire extinguisher, I don't believe that's a legal requirement.
You will need however, hi viz for each occupant ( make sure these are available inside the car to put on before exiting ), spare bulbs, breath test kit x 2 and a warning triangle.
I don't bother with a GB sticker as it says GB on the reg plate blue flash part.
I think that's about it. Mods:
Front Fogs + Halos
FBH Remote Control
The 1st Ever RRS Modded Grill
Garmin Nuvi + D4 Surround + Reversing Camera.
D4 Steering Wheel.
Rear Boot Spoiler.
Twin Brake Lights.
Wing Mirror Indicator Repeaters.
Long Roof Rails

I'm not scared, I'm outta here.

And spare bulbs are not a legal requirement, so you shouldn't be asked to show them, but if you have a light out they can insist that the bulb is replaced before allowing you to proceed.

The handbook for my MY12 said to adjust the headlights for continental driving, which I did a couple of years ago, but I never bothered to switch them back.
Not been flashed by other drivers at night in the UK, and it's been through two Mots, so must be OK. MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

the "foreign" adjustment makes them flat ... so you don't shine to the right, just a little less to the left. .
