Advice for "aggressive" gearbox

Hi,

I've got a '59 plate 70k mile D4 3.0TDV6 HSE which has two little auto gearbox issues that I think maybe related. I've owned it 2 months (previously had a D3 and Defender) and it has 6 months warranty and only one previous owner who has kept it absolutely immaculate (literally like new) and it has wanted for nothing, just FYI...

First thing when you put it in gear (1st or reverse) the revs drop and it feels like it's going to stall. it doesn't stall but it gets close. Only does this first time it's started that day and after 1 min or so it's fine. It also seems to change gear quite aggressively from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd when it's cold (mainly) but then is fine when it's warmer. It also (again mainly from cold) has quite a delay when pulling off and then seems to suddenly go - almost like there a pressure issue in the torque convertor.

I'm thinking a fluid change and adaptions reset as a first port of call but any suggestions welcomed - although it's under warranty the people are LR specialists so I want to be ahead of the curve before they start messing with things!

At 70k a megaflush made my jerky and reluctant gearbox massively smoother and quicker. IMHO at that mileage would be worth doing regardless of warranty
 D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

Thanks James - that's my feeling too - glad it fixed yours!! I will try and get it done under the warranty I think!

The delay when pulling off is something they all seem to do. Especially noticeable when you are pulling out from a junction and need to accelerate sharply to fit in that gap. There's a good few past threads on it in here, so may be worth doing a search. It is something that you can get used to though.

Mine is on the same sort of mileage and does this too. I always thought it was a bit strange as no other Autos I've had have done the drag race start away from roundabouts Laughing

Initially I thought it must be due to the weight of the D4, but after doing similar research came the the same conclusion as those above have suggested.

It's not at the point of worrying me yet, but I will be doing a gearbox flush and filter change at the next service Thumbs Up

Mine has none of the symptoms described in this thread. I have no hesitation and it’s very smooth in both auto and in command shift.

The only thing I notice is I sometimes get a very minor shunt on the down shift from maybe 2nd to 1st if breaking hard.

Apart from that, very smooth at all times.

Geoff. Did a mega flush on mine at 60k. My mileage is now on 93k Thumbs Up

I think that a fluid change is the first port of call- I’m not particularly concerned about it, just want to be ahead of things before the warranty runs out!

Interesting..... mine is doing exactly the same. 13 plate D4 with 63000. I also have a weird 'hunting' sensation on low revs (https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/engine-hunting-light-throttle-175703.html)

I wonder if it's all related? Would be great to hear if a gearbox flush and reset fixes it.

won't reverse when cold

Ours does the 'shunt' when slowing to a stop when dead cold

Does anyone though have difficulty reversing up a slight slope when cold. Ours exhibits 'clutch slip' then - engine revs climb but no progress at all rearwards. Low range enables rearward movement. Any threads on that? Confused

Vehicle was a few days away from a service.

(Harwoods) 'checked' gearbox issues and apparently re-set (it). Still the same and reluctant to reverse when cold unless I put into low range. It's done 31k - too early for a flush?

They also re-set (something) to hopefully cure side window misting (with two pax) when on auto in damp conditions.

Is the mysterious re-set the panacea to get the customer out of the service department? Now a week out of its 3 year service plan.

Harwoods like the starship enterprise with wall to wall croissants and constant glowing LEDs and lots of meetings going on. Helps pay for the £68k+ D5 Commercial on the showroom floor.
