any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi everyone, OK this is the first time ive come on to post anything but Im in need of some advice and Im sorry this is going to be a long one but ive tried to get as much info together as I can before I put pen to paper so to speak.

Ok so I have a 2005 2.7tdv6 hse which I bought last summer. it has 170k miles on the clock and was an upgrade from my old P38 range rover. from the mass of paper work I have it showed that the belts and pulleys we last changed in 2011 so didn't want to drive it till i had those sorted and after looking at mountains of posts and youtube issues i thought play it safe and get a new oil pump and water pump fitted while I was at it. unfortunately due to a spinal injury I haven't been able to drive it nor really look at things with great detail so its pretty much just sat there since September. I have my Gap tool and wanted to check the codes for anything bad before I paid out to have the belts and pumps done. when i was first able to have a look I noticed the EGRs had been blanked off but didn't have any paperwork to show any work done like that but i didn't expect there to be for obvious reasons. my gap tool showed only two faults which were the FBH and the antenna ( this one is constantly on) i have no issues with he FBH working and the satnav and radio function fine so just thought these are my two gremlin codes that dont really effect things.

Around December when my wife went to start the car for me just to keep checking all is ok it wouldn't start, so checked the battery on a tester and it showed it needed replacing which I did with the one most people seem to suggest. that was put on and it started fine and all seemed to work ok until the next frost and it didnt start again. I found a pattern that anything under 3 degrees outside and it wouldn't start so things pointed in the direction of the glow plugs and that seems to be the case as when its too cold and it wont start I pour a little warm water on the hose near the sensor and it fires right up but since then ive had th FBH code disappear and that comes on just fine but a new one show up which is B1C57-14(2F) passive start ignition relay coil circuit- general electical failure circuit short to ground or open. this and the B1A56-18(2F) antenna circuit -general electrical failure current below threshold, are the only two thats shown up since.

Roll on to wed 8th of this month ( march) and its booked in to Land Rover as my mechanic only really deals with old series and older range rovers as their specialist garage and as i needed the car for hospital i had to get it done at the place who could see me the quickest and that was the main dealers.

So the week before i went with the wife to put half a tank of fuel in as it was near empty, at this point it hadn't been started since start of feb. It started fine with no issues but as we pulled away the amount of white smoke left behind was terrible and this didn't stop for a few hundred yards till we got to the petrol station in our village and that's the only time before and since that it done that. asked my mech what he thought and he said could be an injector leaking and as its sat for a while its shown up, i checked the codes and nothing.

So on the morning of the 8th we get ready for the 30 mile trip to landy to have the work done, they said will need for 2 days but might be done in one. so we check for any faults before we leave and its just the two we normally get. we arrive at land rover and check again before we hand over the keys and nothing new other than the same normal codes we get. I tell them I had to put warm water on the hose this morning to get it to start as it was -4 and the glow plugs need attention so if they try to start it the next day it might have the issue if its below 3 degrees to which they laughed and said ok yeah that happens and will make a note of it.

Later that afternoon I get a call to say they will need the car an extra day as when they went to have a look, the oil pump wasn't where they expected it to be Question i joked and said where would it be in the glove box?? and how can a land rover dealers not know where their own engine parts are located. was told it would need an extra days work but not to worry it wouldn't cost me any extra as was their problem so I wouldn't incur anymore labour costs. I joked with a few friends that im gonna end up paying for that somehow you watch.

So the next day (Thursday) I get a call to ask if i knew if the car was in restrictive performance mode to which I said no its never had an issue other than cold starting and was fault free when i handed over the keys. I was told they want to put it on a diagnostics which was i think about £150 and i told them no ill come with my own and have a look first and go from there but was told to wait as cant test anything while the belts and pumps were off. they said they hadn't touched the car till then and it had sat since I left it there and I said well it was driven out the parking space where I left it as it had gone before we even left the building and someone had to have looked if they thought the oil pump was in a different location, I didn't really get a response to that. On the Friday morning I get an email with the health check showing over 3k of work they said it needs ( one of which was £17 plus vat for a number plate bulb) along with the diagnostics which they did free of charge and it showed several code one of which would be the limp mode. and another with a ? saying chipped, i have no idea if its been remapped or anything. I get a call to see if i want any or the work done that they said in the health check or for them to investigate this limp mode to which I said no as by this time I just want it home as I may have joked about them finding things to cover the cost of that extra day but now ive convinced myself it to be true so I just want it home to figure out my next move. was told that's ok and it should then be done later that day or if not and as its the weekend then Monday at the latest. Monday comes and goes so I call them Tuesday to see whats going on and was told can collect on Wednesday which we do.

So with the work it went in for done we are a week later and I go to collect with the idea of getting the RAC to get me home as id lost confidence in them and just wanted it away. so i get there and get the keys and the guy goes to start it and it would not have it and told him the glow plugs are gone and it needs abit of warm water. he said thats ok some times they just need a little extra time and they will start. It didnt and he got some hot water and it fires up right away but it goes in limp mode right away. I plug in the Gap tool and have a list of new codes come up so i clear them to see whats what and some stay and some go but its still in limp mode. after 15-20 mins of trying to look up codes i could see them looking at me out the sales room windows and i just wanted to get out of there and limp it around the corner and get the RAC out to get my loaded up and home to then fig out my next step, so as i pull away it doesn't show anything and starts to drive like normal. so i pull up round the corner and turn it off and wait 5 mins and try again and all normal and ok with no restrictive performance or anything, some codes still there but all seems to be working so I head home and its not flashed up since. I worked it out that every single time its been started or gone out its sat idling for around 10-15 mins before setting off and so for the first time since I've had it and in the colder weather it was started up and tried to be moved right away and that was at first by land rover and each time they moved it and then by me when i first went to collect it and it wasnt till it had warmed up that it didnt show limp mode.

I wanted to try and test my theory by trying again in the cold start and letting it then warm up and see if it done it but was have not had a day since then that its been really cold and we have had to use it a couple of times to get me to hospital and the GP since i got it back last wed and each time its been fine. I have seen a few posts where people have said similar things where its fine but when really cold it goes into limp mode but once warmed up its ok.
My apologies for the novel of a back story that ive just written and the long list of codes and live readings that Im about to add but I really needed to get all the info I can with all the codes I have in hope a few people might be seeing the same thing pop up and hopefully have a decent collective of the same thoughts thus pointing me in the right direction as I only have one other place that people recommend around here and that JSF and if possible id like to go in and say ok a week before we had white smoke but nothing since and then it went in and all this has happened and its pointing to either this or that so can we start looking there before we cast a whole wide net to see.

ok so some of these codes have gone since the first reading on collection but some are still there but also have changed the letter or number thats in the brackets after the main code. some of the live feeds are while sitting at idle and others while my wife was driving hence why the balancing off set readings all say the same when its being driven. again my sincere apologies for the long story but I try to get all the info that I have in my hands to give as much of a picture as possible and if I reply to anyone and it comes across as really thick but my medication im currently taking has caused me to not process info as quick as i normally would and I may answer before ive taken on board whats been said and my wife isnt always around to make sure

ok so the day i drop it on before I leave and then when I get there the codes were

B1C57-14(2F) passive start ignition relay coil circuit short to ground or open
B1A56-18(2F) Antenna curcuit-general electrical failure curcuit current below threshold.

I shall post screen shots in the comments of codes since ive collected the car. As I said some are right as i first started it and then cleared them then checked after and then each morning prior to heading to hospital or doctor's and each time after weve come out to head home, along with some live readings that were taken when on idle and some while driving and then the last lot of codes ive checked this morning but not gone out anywhere as not got to and dont want to push my luck with things but please any feed back that anyone has will be greatly appreciated, its just been registered as a disabled car and its the first time since December ive had to go out and its now all this.

cheers Paul ( if I dont get round to thanking each comment individually please know I appreciat it)

Hello and welcome....

I am not technically minded so sadly I cannot advise on what is wrong but I can see that you need someone who is technically minded and able to diagnose.

To me that isn't going to be a Land Rover dealer.

I had a quick search around on the site (as I am not local to you) and JSF 4x4 in Norwich seem highly rated.

They are less far than the 30 miles to your Land Rover place and I suspect will be much better.

I haven't used them but others on here have.

Good luck!

Hi Jim, Thank you for the reply.

Yes JSF arnt that far from the dealership Norwich. my understanding is some codes can have several reasons for appearing and with the amount thats currently showing up I hope some will marry up with another and eliminate other possible things so ticking off certain boxes so to speak. if this post gets a good amount of comments and the majority of comments are saying similar things then at least I can go in with and idea to discuss with them and the right path to look at from the off.

Im sure some time sooner rather than later ill be posting all is find......fingers crossed anyway

cheers Paul

Also have a chat with Alan Curtis (independent Lr Technician) down in Halesworth on the Suffolk border. Very knowledgeable and always did me good when I used him for my cars
