Your advice / opinions

Hi all

We have a 55 plate Discovery 3.

Over recent weeks it has begun to feel sluggisg and I had wanted the tracking checking, so last weekend it was taken to a dealer for a check over and diagnostic.

I has informed EGR fault was logged and advised require two new EGR valves.
One of the cars two horns isnt working.
Nearside front ball joint, slight lift advised to fit both sides.
Anti roll bar bushes both front and rear worn.
Nearside rear upper front suspension arm bush slight play.
Requires four wheel alignment and re-align steering wheel.

The total for all this is just short of £1500 at the dealers, as the car is a year out of warranty but am planning on keeping for two or three years I do not know which route to take. My other half would rather replace the EGR valves rather than blank them off. I am considering using a Land Rover specialist and costs are 40% less than the dealer. I imagine that thee is no or little chance of seeing if the dealer will come to a more realistic price, as the car is booked in for Thursday next week.

I am curious to know what your opinions are?

Cheers

Lee

Get an indy to do the work and take your car to a dealer for wheel alignment

Just blank the EGR's in my opinion...I blanked mine before i got any problems

There is an independent 4x4 (and Land Rover) specialist at Howden that I am considering using instead of the main dealer. I have read about the BAS blanking kit which seems good value, but worried how the car will perform, would it be better with new valves instead?

£1500!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

I would blank the EGR valves off for £50 and get an Indi (only one that has actually done this work on a D3 before!)
10forcash will come to you and I'm pretty sure that he can do all the work except the 4 wheel alignment. Horn replacement is dead easy and you can buy it direct from The Large One (Yeovil LR Parts dept, just mention this forum)

He'll also give you some sound advice on whatever faults need rectifying, which ones that can wait (if you want) and which ones you need to get done pronto.

Depends on how much you dealer wants the work as to how much they'll negotiate, but ISTR all LR's over three years get better pricing due to loyalty discount, but that me just be a local thing.

ISTR EGR valves are £130ish each (of the top of my head) and as blanking them has no negative side effect, that's what i'd do.

As for the ride, if you get the rest of it done (if it's truely worn) then it'll feel like a new car!

The suspension does knock which I suspect is the ARB bushes and the ball joint.

I would like them done before the tracking, and yes I think it will really improve the car.

The big one for me really is the EGR valves.

With all the work done I think it would be good to drive again.

The parts cost less than £200 if you blank the EGR's with BAS's full kit

Labour is the big bill on your quote for the work

Yes I did cheers Nick, have been on a course all day. Think totalling it up yours was a good £200 less than the dealer I have been to, surely main dealers should be the same?

I am waiting for the local independent to ring back with a price, very sure thay can do all the work required.

Also considering ringing the main dealer to see if he can come up with a more realistic price!

I rang the main dealer on saturday morning having sent an e-mail on Thursday and had no response.

He told me I would get a reply by Monday, totally got the impression that I was an inconvenience and that he didn't want to talk on the phone!

I tried to question £25 for supplying from ARB bushes and another £25 for the rear ones. I was fed some rubbish about unsprung weight and needing to replace the bolts?!? When I questioned was it also to fit the rubber shimms under the ARB bushes he didnt know!

I explained that another main dealer comes in almost £250 less for the same work, still waiting for his response as I asked for a more realistic price.

I have previously had Fords for years and knew they were always poor at main dealer, I had expected more from Land Rover. Do they not realise we are in a recession £85 labour costs are daylight robbery!

Well

After all that its going to the main dealer, its not going to be cheap but they have offered a goodwill gesture and reduced their bill by a substantial amount. I was surprised how close an independent was to the dealers price!

So the car is going in on Thursday morning and should be getting it back on Friday. I reckon with all the new parts it should feel quite good to drive.
