Advice and opinions please – OZ TENT |
|
Hi folks
I would like your advice, experiences and opinions of the Oz Tent and ground tents in general please.
My wife and I have a 6 month old baby who is fast growing into a toddler, so we have decided to sell our roof tent and switch to a ground tent. My wife and I are a little nervous about the baby sleeping up high when we’re not also up in the roof tent e.g. for afternoon naps and early in the evening etc, and we also think our style of camping will change to a slower pace where we would like to use the vehicle during the day to go out on trips from a camp site without having to pack a rooftent away each time.
I have an opportunity to purchase a nearly new OzTent RV5 and front panels from a nice fella in a different club. I think it is ideal for our needs but I would welcome your thoughts when compared with other ground tents out there.
I need the following from the tent that I choose:
- fairly quick to erect and collapse so that we can use it for touring as well as camping in the same place for a week or 2 at a time.
- room for me to stand up in at 6ft 3.
- room to sit 3 or 4 people at a table to eat under cover if (when) it rains – needn’t be masses of room but just space to get out the rain for a meal.
- value for money (but not necessarily 'cheap')
- Ideally I want a tent which I can pitch by myself, that way my wife can look after the miniature person (or people!) - another reason the Oz Tent appeals.
I think an Oz Tent suits my needs, here are the plus points that I perceive:
- Popular / great reputation (do you agree?)
- quick enough to pitch that we could easily move camp every day on a road trip
- spacious (do you agree?)
- Can provide awning cover over the boot area of the Disco
- Looks the part! (shouldn’t matter but kind of does!)
Perceived bad points:
- expensive to buy compared to other family size tents
- has to be carried on the roof
- quite heavy but not much more so than other large tents
SO, here is the question.
Should I? If so why?
Should I not? Why?
The long term plan is to buy a MyWay off-road trailer tent or similar, but it will be a couple of years before I can afford one and we want to make sure that we will keep camping as a family before investing so much cash. SWMBO's - '14 FL2 TD4 XS auto. SOLD.

I had one for a couple of trips, thought it was the dogs danglie's pesonally!
Took the grand - kids down to St. ives in cornwall, loved every minute of it. The resale value of these items are very good, so buy and try.
You wont lose that much if you do need to sell on.
Oh and by the way mine fitted inside the car, from back and over thye gear stick!! (rv 4)

I recently sold my roof mounted Hannibal in favour of an Oztent RV5. With additional Sides, front panel and floor saver.....
There is enough space for us to sleep comfortably, two Goanna stretcher beds, have a double camping table in the front bit and two comfy chairs.....
The RV5 is easy to put the basic tent up, less than 30 seconds, but the rest fo the poles, sides and guys are very uncomplicated, it's not as heavy as you might think, but does need space on a roof rack, or roof bars.
With some of the additional zip on extension bits your tent system can expand with your family......
IMHO a very good value product I would be happy to recommend.
Cheers

Thanks Andi - a really useful comparison as you have done what we are about to do.
I had forgotten about the tag along tent option as well - a good way to future proof the tent and keep SWMBO happy!
I'm thinking that could be the 'spare room' for me to stumble into after a few camp fire beers when she is already asleep with the kids! SWMBO's - '14 FL2 TD4 XS auto. SOLD.

We overland in a standard ground tent it was a lot cheaper and fits in the back rather than on the roof it's just as quick to put up as I've done it alongside someone putting up an oztent and as been said by the time all of the guy lines and extra poles its not 30 seconds. Just my opinion
