AGM or Wet Cell Battery
My 2007 D3 needs the battery replacing. I know the favoured replacement is the Exide from Tayna, but I have an Altox WBUS-5 GPS FBH controller fitted. I mostly do short local runs, so was considering fitting an AGM battery, as the car won't have a lot of time to re-charge. Will an AGM battery work with the D3 electronics and alternator?

It will with a shorter life as the D3 charges at a higher voltage than the AGM can cope with particularly in cold weather, you are better sticking with the wet cell and using the money saved to buy a Ctek charger and tow bar connector and use it once a week It can when others can't,

There’s nothing wrong with an agm battery in a d3/4.
Going against the previous comments, they are very good at handling the charging voltage and as you say, will charge up quicker than a wet cell.
D4’s come with AGM as standard for that very reason...
I would be happy to put an AGM in my D3. In fact my aux battery was AGM and managed very well.Bodsys Brake Bible

Just for your information I have had an AGM LR battery in my D3 for several years and I do little mileage and all has been well, although I do charge both my AGM and aux batt every few weeks with the c-tek.
Not sure how it would be if i was charging it off the alternator for hundreds of miles per wk though year in year out D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

Well, they’re both strong differing opinions on that thread and I’m not sure what the final outcome is, so essentially, none the wiser either way.
My AGM battery lasted 6 years, with constant long drives charging it throughout the year and temperatures.
Personally I would have no problem putting an AGM battery on my D3. Indeed, my current wet battery installed in January 2016 is failing to hold charge more than a couple of days. Seems to me that both view are right and both views are wrong
But my view is right for me Bodsys Brake Bible

I haven’t read the links, but personal experience of replacing the original battery in my 2006 D3 with an AGM was a positive one.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

As the saying goes “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” , slightly off topic, approximately two years ago I fitted a Discovery AGM battery to a 30 year old 85hp tractor in place of the recommended wet cell battery, the tractor (Case 885XL) is used for perhaps 1 hour a week in winter for loading duties, since fitting the battery it has never failed to start and has only been charged once as a precautionary top up, with the same size good wet cell battery it needed charging every two weeks to guarantee the tractor starting, although I doubt the old tractor alternator charges at the high rate as a good Disco alternator.

Thanks for all your replies chaps. The more threads I read the more confused I get, until I am totally confused. I have decided to stick with standard spec. My Tayna Exide battery arrived today and I checked the voltage at 12.56V. So on slow charge from 14:00 yesterday.

"Genuine" LR Battery
I rang my local garage this morning to arrange for a new battery to be fitted as mine is failing. The really helpful chap informed me I needed to fit a "genuine LR" one owing to the complicated electrical system - all for £271.58p
Quoting Robbie, I replied "LR don't make batteries" adding "why would I pay an extra £100 for a LR sticker"
The line went dead!
now trying to find someone local to fit the Robbie et al recommended Exide

I seem to have read somewhere that LR has changed to AGM for its newer vehicles so that should do for the older ones

I have an AGM in my 2006 D3 petrol, which is over 6 years old.
It gets driven, on average, once a week for 40km.
And the battery is still going strong.
Mind you, I do plug in a solar panel when it is sitting at home in the carport.

Perfect for your environment, no long journeys, charge topped up and no cold weather to push the charging current above the critical limit for an AGM, just don’t go on a long journey out into the bush or you may be in serious trouble It can when others can't,

The charging current has also been reduced on “newer” vehicles to meet the maximum required AGM charging rate
The point being anyone who fits an AGM battery to a D3 is wasting money, better to fit a wet cell battery and use the “wasted” money on a good battery charger. It can when others can't,
