Mann+Hummel regular engine air filter, C 31 196 for the princely sum of 12.57 euro.
The KN filters will just make your MAF dirty with the oil and you’ll regret getting one.

K&Ns that use oil worked on engines with carbs, but should not be used on injected ones for the reason already stated.

I had an ITG “performance” air filter on my 2006 D3 for a while. I thought it was a good idea to fit it at same time as it was remapped.
What I hadn’t accounted for was the additional dust from driving off road, meant I was forever cleaning it. and replaced it with another a couple of times. I tired of this and went back to fitting good quality or oe branded paper filters, but changing them far more frequently than the service schedule states.
I could just about detect a noticeable difference between a new paper filter and the ITG filter, but it really was only marginally in favour of the ITG.
The cost of a new paper filter is negligible relevant to the overall running costs.
I do remember leaving a filter change for longer than usual and posting about the improvement in mpg and throttle response after fitting a new one. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

A bit of dust from the Australian outback. The LR filters are cheap enough, just replace a bit more often if needed.

I change oil every 10k km - about every 8-9 months - and that includes also the three filters (cabin air, engine air, oil). Cost is about a tank of gas or 100 eur.

Also if you ask a turbocharger rebuild workshop, they'd easily point out one that's run with paper filters and one that's been run on free flow filters just on the impeller alone. visiting from www.rrsport.co.uk
