| Airbags - when will they go off ?? |

I was driving down the motorway last week, bored and got thinking.....
what would happen if I took the keys out of the ignition 
Obviously the engine would stop running properly, the steering would lock, and the brakes may be a little less responsive than normal.
Now, I also assumed I would crash. Well actually, I would definately crash
But my question is......
Would the Airbags go off and save my life  Duncan

Airbags would maybe come on with front or side impact....but.....if you've taken the key out would the EPB come on and activate in emergency stop mode (is this EPB shoes or brake discs that operate??) and bring you to a controlled halt thereby saving your life???
Steering might be a problem tho.
Never sure if airbags will save life if impact speed is high enough to throw internal organs about though and cause internal damage.
Good question.....hope never to have to find out for real

Yes ...because the restraints control module always has a minimum power reserve of 150milliseconds in case the traditional power supply is disrupted. This is enough energy to fire the driver and passenger airbags and signal the seat belt pre-tensioners

mmmmm EPB come on in a manual when you remove the key (who's gonna test the theory......), but not Auto.
For removing the key, I would GUESS that the systems will still be 'awake' until the 2 minute shutdown timer has been reached, so I reckon that they would still go off.

but the airbags would still come on though. Thats reassuring.
I dont intend testing the theory but its one of those questions that one ponders over during hundreds of miles of motorway travelling Duncan

As above, in an auto you have to be in park to get the key out. Common on the M25, just not at 70mph
So in a manual, you take the key out and the EPB engages
In an Auto, you need to have it in park to take the key out.
Both point to stopping quite suddenly I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Well in a manual doesn't the EPB come on when you remove the key??
Rumour has it that the car will also enter "Darwinian mode" though and ensure that your life is quickly brought to an end to try and prevent your genes carrying on. Unlike your jeans, which are quite likely to carry on due to Newton's laws...  Cheers

Mate of mine took his keys out of a Capri years ago - not an issue apart from fact we where coasting down a 1:10 (Alderley Edge for those that know area) and stearing locked - how he maged to get it back in and not crash whilst we were all screaming I'll never know - not recomended unless you want liquid pants
