Aircon: High Idle??
Has anyone noticed this before or is it an issue:
Noticed over the weekend when I was out and about that sometimes when using the aircon in Auto mode, when I selected Neutral while waiting at lights etc, that the idle sat at around 1000 rpm. At one point I noticed it as high as 1100ish. I noticed if I turned the A/C off, it dropped to its normal 800rpm ish.
AC all operated properly, car ran fine in gear etc with nothing different and no errors displayed.
Outside temp ranges from 29-33 on the dash display and I had the inside set at around 20 ish. Is this normal, and just the engine putting the idle up to compensate for a high load from the AC?
Thanks

The engine revs will increase to compensate for the load placed by the air con compressor

I bought my vehicle when it had 93000km on the clock and from the day that I've bought it when I put it into neutral or into park the rpm rises to 1100 (with a/c on) and when putting it into drive it comes back closer to 800rpm but my friend has a 2011 Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE (stick shift 6 speed) and his vehicle always stays closer to 800rpm whether it is in drive, neutral or park always (with a/c on) and mileage of his vehicle is 55000km. The differences between the two vehicles are only the gearbox and mileage. Can anybody please explain the reason behind different idle rpms in identical vehicles?
My Vehicle : 2014 Discovery 4 SDV6 SE Tech (8 Speed-Rotary Shift), at the moment 105000km on the clock.
Thanks.

My concern is if my friends vehicle can take the load of the air con at 800rpm (at idle) why does my vehicle can't take the load of the air con by keeping the rpm at 800rpm without increasing it to 1100rpm (at idle).
In both the vehicles air con temp was set to 19°C and same blower speed was selected (One step).
Outside temp = (30-35°C)

Aircon also ups the revs at idle on my 2006 D3.

It does the same on a D3 V8 - normal idle rpms are ~650. In 30C heat and AC on at start it’ll increase to 1100-1200 rpms at idle. Rpms drop instantly to normal if I turn AC/fans off.

It’s all about efficiency and possibly later software, not just for the air con but also for the viscous fan working at max keeping the engine temp down when stationary. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Gayathra,
again! my old MY2011 D4 HSE Lux done this and my new to me 2014 D4 XXV do the same (both when the ext temp is more tha 30°C).
So, assuming that your friend's D4 does not do it, the anomaly is that vehicle, not yours ....Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition
