Aircon pipes... make your own?

Hi, I’ve used the search facility but can’t find an answer. Has anyone make their own section of aircon pipes instead of buying new?
It looks as if the bulk of the rear aircon pipes are 16mm, that’s readily available, and there are compression fittings for same pipe.
Why can’t they not be joined with the fittings or braze them?

Any links to similar threads or thoughts appreciated.

In the past, at least one member here has replaced the ac pipes with plastic ones. From memory the work was done by a mobile ac specialist.

Because aluminium can not be brazed.... brazing is for copper etc.

You can take the effort to alu weld them... but why all that effort?

How much cheaper will it be in the end??

Pretty sure you can braze alloy pipe. It was an aircon engineer that suggested doing it. The pipe is readily available and around £20 a length. Was just wondering why it didn’t seem to be a suggested fix.

Yeahh but not with standard brazing materials.... like plumbing materials... so you need special material, which is not cheap... bending equipment, rubber hose, etc.etc.
then.... the OEM pipes are Not cheap, but not extreme expensive either... you never need all of them...

In my opinion it is not worth the hassle....

Hi Harold, are you saying to use the standard pipe, (oem)? What do you mean rubber pipe? I have the plumbing equipment, pipe benders etc, and I know a guy that can braze. The body is off just now, so my thought was to remove all the pipes from the body, cut out the bad spots and braze in new sections. From initial inspection it looks as if previous owner has been in and replaced two short pieces on the drivers side with rubber hose, then two small sections above the spare wheel, and the sections leading into the compressor unit in the boot are rubber, but not sure if this is meant to be like that fro vibration purposes. I’ve not inspected the passenger side yet due to the suspension gubbins being in the way. I am hoping this side is better condition.

If all it needs is six sections brazed in, then surely with a couple of lengths of pipe and a couple of hours for the welder dude, then this will work out cheaper than full replacement sections.

Sorry for all the questions, but just trying to understand. I’ve never had an HSE, so these are new exciting issues 😂
