ALTERNATOR LIGHT COMES ON & P0622 INTERMITANTLY

Good morning my fellow lr3 owners I have a very unusual situation that has irritated me to the fullest lol. I am looking for some diagnostic info on LR3's charging system concerning the outdoor temperature and how this could effect the charging system voltage.

The battery light comes on and stays on when I start up engine sometimes. It seems to do this on a cold morning or after sitting.

The alternator will charge at around 13.5volts give or take and when I cut ignition switch off and restart engine after warming up then the alternator will charge 14.5 volts with no other issues.

Battery has never failed to start and voltage never drops below 13 volts when running.

Also I get the Field terminal code for P0622 when this happens.
and the code sets when I turn key on and I don't start engine.

Alternator tests good as well as battery is new and still does it.

It seems like if I slowly turn ignition to start engine the light will stay off.

The suspension leaks slow but I eliminated that circuit and battery light still comes on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Alternator

Hi,
Had the same problem with mine.
Check to see if the alternator bushes are sticking, mine were.
Replaced the brush pack, not had a problem since

Generally, a faulty alternator will damage a battery, so it is better to replace the alternator.

Replace the brush pack, it will do, and saves you a lot of money..

Brushes wear, when they do, the appear to look long enough but are to short, the tension (brush Springs) on them is to low and although they measure ok, they do not perform ok anymore..

We see this on a weekly basis here in our workshop..

ALTERNATOR LIGHT COMES ON & P0622 INTERMITANTLY

Thank you all so much for the information. Its a aftermarket alternator #3 that I have warrantied due to the same battery light coming on intermittently from time to time. All 3 have done it from jump and they are supposed to be new Laughing I may just have to get a factory one. It still puzzles my a aftermarket alternator wont work on these LR3s what makes them so different lol.

Who is the manufacturer then?

AFAIK Denso is the manufacturer for “Land Rover” stamped alternators. Thumbs Up

three faulty alternators from the same place Big Cry possibly does not know how to refurbish them. Go for a "New" Denso and no more problems.

How come aftermaket alternators do not work well on LR3s?

I should have express this question in my original post so please forgive me. The p0622 code sets on key on some of the time. I normally would not go thru this but my mechanical mind wont let me just buy a 600 dollar alternator lol. Also, I thought I would be useful to some of the members if it was determined why aftermarket alternators have issues on LR3? I understand the PWM system overall but in my case the aftermarket alternator works well as a matter of fact all 3 had the intermittent light from time to time.

I will tell you the story as its a good one!!
I have had this LR3 for 3 years and it had the OEM alternator on it and that failed with the smoking and all. The battery was a fairly new BOSCH H16 with 700CCA. I replaced the alternator with a Duralast from AutoZone and charged the battery. Ran like a champ for a couple of months.
We went to Nags Head Beach and then the after a few days the battery light came on. I was using the center console aux port the play my cellphone which is something I normally didn't do till that point. At this point I am 200 plus miles away Crying or Very sad . So luckily the smart charging system was at 13.5 or 14 volts so we enjoyed the rest of the vacation and I replaced it as soon as I got back. Next light came on again with this alternator and that's when I noticed that sometimes when I turn key on slowly as like 123 then start vs just turning the key quickly the light will stay off and it charges at 14.5. I am thinking there is something with PCM parameters or one of the modules. I am looking for how does the LR3 PCM read battery temp Etc and what other circuit could cause this? The cables and wires check good.
Thanks you all for the replies etc,
Rob

it doesn't read the battery temperature.

It may determine it from the ambient temperature sensor
or inlet temperature

Hi,

When you say "smart charging system was at 13.5 or 14 volts " do you have a dual battery/split charge system in the Disco?

Whether it matters or not, I believe that 800 CCA is the suggested rating for petrol V8.

Good evening, Currently I have a new battery 900cca the other was about 4yrs old. Still have the intermittent battery light. I only have the single battery hook up. The reason why I am posting this is because even though I can buy a new denso alternator it's more of the reason why this is happening. When I start up some times the light is on and when i shut off and turn key back on I can get light to go off. Using the self diagnostic and multimeter it definitely is chargeing 13.5 or so but when i shut off and manage to get light off it is doing its thing at 14.5 and unless I cut it off it will stay there. There definitely seems to be a temp correlation as when its cold cold thats when it gets worse. Thanks again

Possibly the regulator in the alternator may have a bad connection. I have seen replacement regulator kits for the alternator but you require a large soldering iron to unsolder a couple of joints.
