Alternator - How Much and how easy to swap

Just been recovered to home - burning smell in engine compartment - drained the battery to zero in less than 3 minutes.

The RAC man said he was prety sure the Altermator short circuit.

2 questions how much is an alternator and how dificult to swap my self - I changed the pulley idler only a couple of weeks ago without to much difficulty.

I was going to prove if it was the Alternator tomorrow - Battery is disconected and on charge I was going to disconect the Alternator and make sure everything was working OK.

Do you guys have any thoughts.

Thanks
Duncan

It's unusual for a D3 alternator to fail, and even more unusual for any alternator to fail into a 'smelly' state....
I'd firstly check the wiring between the back of the alternator and the starter to see if the heavy link wire or connections show signs of heating up - did the charge warning light appear on the dash?

Cheers Bodsy Thumbs Up but I doubt Duncster can wait until I get back from Tunisia Sad

10FC thanks for the advice and have a great trip - I always like to have a dabble and you would have been at the top of the list.

Ive managed to get the alternator off and with a charged battery everything seems OK - it does smell like it has been burning so perhaps I am the unlucky one. - I will go and check the wiring though just in case it is chaffing when in position.

My bigest problem was getting the viscous fan off it didnt want to budge.

Big One - where abouts are you? Im guessing the Lakes or Yeoval I can never remember

Thanks Wex - I did much the same using grips and a big spanner.

I think I may make the tool Andrew talks of only need to drill a couple of holes in a bit of steel bar.

Thanks

Need to remove it to clean out my intercooler & will make up a tool if I can get the right size Thumbs Up
