I've had to have the alternator replaced on the D3 after exactly 4 years and 39000 miles of ownership. I reckon this service life is absolutely pathetic. Indeed after 30 years of car ownership, it's the first alternator failure I've had. I spoke to LR Customer Services today to enquire as to whether they would be willing to contribute to the cost and I was informed by them that the extended discretionary period LR give for a contribution is 9 months...so I missed out by 3 months. For me I think this is pretty poor service life and support.
The one upside is that it seems to have cured the sometimes slow to bright up and sometimes flickery when cold sat nav screen. Co-incidence or not? D3 HSE, Stornoway grey, 2007 MY, side steps, privacy glass, door protection strips.

Lancaster LR in Welwyn did it for approx £280 all in. The replacement alternator is an overhauled unit and has12 months warranty. I phoned local independents and franchised dealers, and also parts suppliers-some of whom couldn't locate an alternator, some who wanted £400 for new with no exchange possible. I hope I've been able to help? D3 HSE, Stornoway grey, 2007 MY, side steps, privacy glass, door protection strips.

It does seem that this cold snap is coincidental with alternator failures on 4-year old D3s, or at least suspected failures reported on this site. Mine might be on the way out but I'll let TFC decide that when he services the car next. I'm not so fussed about whether it's a short life for this part or not. The car has done 93,000 km and been through enough mud and dust that if I want it to remain reliable I'll have to renew some parts. The car still makes me
