Analysis Paralysis...........V6 3.0 versus V8 5.0
Mayday from South Africa, I previously owned a D3 2008 HSE so 2.7 diesel in Scotland, I am fortunate enough to be looking at the second hand market in South Africa where V8 5.0 are abundant. I've driven 10 this week 3 V8 and 7 V6.
Vote please........
The V8 drives like a dream and is soooo quiet, but the V6 3.0 is the sensible option, or is it?
AAAArgh.................pricing is the same..........by year, mileage higher slightly on the V8's,
200k kms on the V6's, 250K kms on the V8's......
Then SWMBO wants white out and beige in FF*, I'm a builder woman, not a magician
TIA.

TDV6 diesel, v V8 petrol. Both HSE?
The real question is reliability, does the V8 engine have the edge over the V6, its going to be a workhorse?
Bloody difficult decision.

Get both, decide which you like most and keep the other for parts.

The TDV6/SDV6 can snap its crank.. that’s new engine time.
The D4 V8 petrol will eventually need new timing chain guides and a few other parts while you’re at it. Supposedly affects only MY10-MY12 but some say it’s on all 5.0 V8 and mileage and oil change dependent. Many will be good. Read up on the American forums on the 5.0 engine. If there is a rattle at startup, keep way.
Neither is perfect.
If it were me, I’d still choose the D4 V8.

Ha, so that's why I found a TDV6 with 146k on the clock and supposedly an almost brand new motor with 45 on the clock
All of the V8's have had their timing chains replaced! One in particular has had copious amounts done on top.
Many thanks for this

Down to two cars, I think Pete K you win the prize, cant resist the V8, its just a different animal, quieter, more responsive and makes me grin when I push the right foot to the floor

I've had all the UK diesel models and in the US the 4.4 V8 LR3 and currently have the one of the last built 2016 LR4 with the V6 3.0L. I haven't had a 5.0L V8.
My V8 LR3 was just a brilliant engine. So quiet and smooth. The V6 3.0l is the same block as the V8 5.0L but with the back two cylinders closed off. The engine sounds like a bag of spanners, and I think it will need more regular oil changes (plus the V6 3.0 needs really funky oil from LR only).
As has been said all the motors have issues, including the 5.0L V8. I'm not sure what the diesel engines are like to work on but the petrol ones aren't too bad. I'd choose on condition. If any of them have the 8 speed box I'd choose that over a 6 speed.PAGODA

Hi pagoda, interesting I never heard of redundant chambers in a V6 before , kind of sensless carrying all that extra block around when they could've just maximised the output, do you know when they started using the ZF8 gearbox on the V8 5.0?
Yes, the V6 Supercharged it just the V8 one with two cylinders blanked off - it was cheaper for JLR to do that than to design a brand new engine. When you consider the fuel consumption vs power of the SCV6 vs the SCV8, it makes very little sense to get the fomer.
Here's my advice: if you don't need the 7 seats or the packing space, rather get a >2013 RRS V8 Supercharged. You can pick these up for very little money right now --
2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear
2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged
I see you're in CT, the diesel V8 3.6 is not bad, but you should really try the SDV8 4.4 - goes like a rocket.
I would offer a test drive of my RRS, but I'm off overseas this week.
Whatever you get, consider joining the Cape Land Rover Club: www.clrc.co.za.--
