Another D4 headlamp discussion ?

ok … I've read a load of good info on here about the difference between Xenon and Halogen dipped beam, showing the shutter arrangement and also the good explanation of why replacing a filament halogen with an LED or Xenon will not be good due to the way the light won't be properly focused by the projector lens.

However … the LED designs are getting better and are closer to the halogen filament than they used to be, so I'm starting to get tempted. It's also unlikely to get spotted in the MoT unless the inspector is prepared to dismantle the front of the car to physically check.

So if an LED (or even a Xenon) were used and the car doesn't think it has Xenons so doesn't operate the shutter (does it even have one in the halogen unit ?? ) does that mean it has a dipped beam using the full output of the lamp, rather than limiting that output ?

What I'm getting at is would this mod give even brighter dipped beam than a proper bi-xenon headlamp would ? or - and this is the problem - would it just be permanently on main beam but without the halogen in-fill ?

I'm running LED headlight bulbs in my Defender. They are so much better than standard but do throw out a bit of a strange beam pattern.

Initially I was getting flashed constantly - every 2nd or 3rd car. After adjusting downwards quite considerably and over to the left a bit that has reduced to 1 or 2 cars per journey.

I did go for the highest LUX rating I could find, which was probably a mistake. middle of the road bulbs would probably give just as good a light without being overly annoying

As for the full and dipped beam. The bulb itself is constructed of 3 groups of 4 LED units. From what I can tell dipped beam lights up the first 2 on each row and full beam lights all of them.
