Another EGR issue? Code P045A

Hi, collected a Disco 3 today (owned by a family member from new) and it lasted well for literally 15mins before going into limp mode.

Managed to get home and car is displaying engine malfunction message continuously from engine start. Code read as P045A.
Car is on 197k miles but has been well looked after and seems smooth/no smoke.

It joins a FFRR and will hopefully begin to brave but at present I need this forum’s sage like wisdom!

Any ideas on fault finding would be appreciated.

Cheers. Chris

You basically have two choices, replace the EGR's with OEM units (expensive and will fail again eventually). Or, blank them and fit a software patch to keep the EML off.

Try unplugging the EGR's elec conns (engine off) then road test and it should stay out of limp.

One caveat though, if the above works DO NOT ignore the problem as you risk melting the inlet manifolds if the EGR's are stuck in the open position!!

If you have a diagnostic tool (GAP IID) you can see what position the valves are in. You can use this tool as well to fit the software patch. Lastly do not opt for the cheapo EGR valves that are available, if you do you will be fitting new ones again before xmas. Laughing

Oh, and welcome to the forum!!

Thanks very much!

I can fit the blanking plates myself no problem and will have to contact a local indy for the patch update.

Out of interest, what issues will I have running the engine without the patch (I.e. driving it to the garage)?

Thanks again

You wont have any issues other than the EML will be illuminated after two ign cycles. The manifolds will be safe too if you have fitted the blanks. You will however need to remove the butterfly from the throttle body which can be a bit fiddly but it's necessary. You don't need to do it straight away though.

As for the software patch would you not buy the tool and do this yourself? If you are inclined to work on your vehicle yourself you are going to need the tool eventually! And regularly Laughing

The best investment you will ever make in the car is the IID diagnostic tool which will pay for itself very quickly. And, you get £300+ back if you ever decide to move on! Thumbs Up
