To be honest any mechanic worth his salt would know by just looking at the filter how to fit it,, if he does not then he should not be messing with it.
Whenever I have done work on an engine I have not touched before in the past I read up on it just to familiarize myself with it.

Flack Thumbs Up

I totally agree but given the sheer number of engine failures it shows there a huge number of sh:censored: te mechanics out there!.
I didn't know if it was a particular failing of that LR part or not or whether it was human error?

We don't know the reasons for those engine failures.

It is the only common factor in all of the failures I have seen

Stupid question Embarassed i know but are we looking at the oil filter after its taken out upside down, so the small lug we can see is at the bottom of the oil filter housing.
Sorry to ask a daft question like that.

Yes, the plastic lug goes into the filter housing, and the cap fitted over the top of it.

In the pictures, it is upside down Thumbs Up

Yes, the tab engages in the engine block with the cover over the top. When you remove it you tend to unscrew the cover a bit to let some oil drain and then remove the cover and filter in one unit, flip it upside down and remove the filter from the cover.

It is one of those things where assembly is not the reverse of disassembly. Well, according to my fat fingers anyway but the pros probably have a better way.

This is my car gents.
I'm not responible for the oil filter.
It was a local garage.
obviously he was unaware of the lining up procedure.
This was done in july (approximately).
I think I have done about 4000mls since oil/filter change.

Not said anything to the garage yet.
I will wait till I have all the information in hand and see what the way forward is.
Not sure how I will convince them to accept the blame though?
Right now I just want the car up and running the way it should and get some of those little jobs done while its in this state.
Anyway its in capable hands now.

I just think, who is going to entertain this 6 months down the road and 4/5k miles later?
its not like they have found the fault and witnessed it with their own eyes.

Stephen, that's Exactly what I was thinking !

Having done at least 4 myself with another due Now as an interim I'm still wondering how this has happened, I'll brush up on the Oil change how to guide in the Wiki and try and find SWMBO's angled border fork from the garage as this makes an excellent puller of the old filter, but even as I'm tapping away now I'm convincing myself its a bad idea !
