Another iPod connectivity question |
|
This may have already been discussed, but I've searched and can't find anything.
Previous posts have already discussed the merits of using the iPod 'dock' connector over the 'earphone' 3.5mm socket - the dock connector gives a line-level output, which sounds better when connected to the aux in of the D3 (or any other iPod ready vehicle for that matter).
I've looked and searched for a dock connector with both power and line level connectors - and can't seem to find one. I'm quite prepared to wield the welding rod (aka fine-tipped soldering iron), and make my own lead - but firstly a question:
Has anyone done this, is it possible ?
I've seen several American websites, and it seems that the actual dock connector is an absolute PITA to work on, and is more often than not filled with 'hot glue' to act as a cable strain-relief (which makes it impossible to add extra wiring to the impossibly small pins !)
I know that I can go buy the LR ACM - but it's a fair few quid, and as my 'pod is always on shuffle, I don't really need the steering wheels controls.
I've got the pinouts for the dock connector, and have a couple of surplus dock to USB leads that I'm about to start hacking - ideally I'll find one of the cables has all the pins I need wired to the dock connector.....what are my chances of that happening though !!!

Save yourself grief and search for item eBay Item No. 230296657480 in eBay. Wife- and Child-friendly solution at a low price. Even made by the same chaps behind the LR sound system. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Paul,
That looks like the thing I need - I might still have a play with the cables I've got lying around and see what I can 'manufacture' !
DrLex - I'm after a 'stealth' install, so although the eBlag item looks good, it's not what I'm after.

Understood; I had the same 'stealth' install with a griffin line-out/charger cable, but was forever rummaging in the centre cubby, trying to forward on or skip back tracks, so wanted something more versatile. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Beware, this item is now cheap because it's wired using the firewire pins of the dock connector (12v) and so won't charge the newer iPod's or iPhone 3G properly, which need 5v (USB type charging). 2005 D3 HSE

Good point; I forgot this, as all four (!) of our iPods are old enough to have FireWire charging. Having said that, I keep a cheapo cigarette lighter USB socket in the glovebox to charge assorted devices (DS, "spare" iPods etc) Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

After seeing one of these on the forum, I bought one and connected it through the LR connection kit I already had installed. I have an I pod touch and it charges no problem. As soon as you plug in the i Pod it starts charging! This Harmon Kardon kit is by far better to use (Just like using a click wheel i Pod) than the LR one which only moves up and down tracks!
