Another roof box/bar/rail question |
|
I've never needed a roof box, so not paid attention, but the potential addition of a second Great Dane means boot space will be negligible, so I need to look into options for when we go away on hols etc
I have a 2016 HSE with short roof rails - they stop before the step down, not the ones that extend over the driver.
Are these fine to use for a large roof box, and just mount the bars as far forward as I can, or am I asking for trouble with the front of the box being unsupported, and should try and find some full length rails?
And I assume I'm looking for specific bars that fit the D4 rails?
Sorry for the basic questions! Ta, Matt

I guess it very much depends on the length of the box you intend to fit and if you have the “T track” system on the rails you do have. You may end up getting more wind noise and more flex in the box if the front is unsupported but that again depends how the box is loaded.
A set of full length rails are not that expensive (unless you buy genuine LR ones) or particularly difficult to fit (just tap all the holes before trying to fit the new bolts) so probably worth while if keeping the car.
Don’t forget… if there’s no pictures it didn’t happen! I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I recently moved from the short rails to the long rails (they were about €150 online for non genuine) and it took about 90mins to install. Not a difficult job. I carry a mix of long and short surfboards and just preferred to spread the load.
Also, make sure you look at the boot opening profile when fixing the roof box, don't want it too far back

If its of interest, I have a pair of OEM LR extended roof rails in black that'll be for sale soon.
I should be able to get them posted to you for £150 all in. I could look at postage etc for you if you like? Send me a PM if you like.
Cheers.

My D3 only has short rails and I use LR roof bars with a Thule roof box (can't remember the size or model but it was the biggest I could get at the time). No issues at all. There is plenty of support at both ends. Just remember not to mount right at the back or it could impede the boot hatch opening.
My biggest problem is being rather short, I have to open the left rear window and stand on the door to reach! 2004 Disco 3 HSE TDV6

Thanks all for the input (and the offer BenB8man).
There's every chance I'll be "forced" to sell the D4 closer to Christmas, as my job now requires a newer car and has an attractive lease option (so keep an eye out in the For Sale section in a few months!!) so I don't really want to invest more than I need to at the min.
I'll need a decent sized box, as I'll be packing for 4 adults plus the dog stuff, but it's good to know that I can probably get away with it with the short rails I've got providing the box is more loaded towards the back (and doesn't get in the way of the tailgate).
Will have a look for offers to see whose doing deals on boxes and bars. I'm wondering whether you can get bars that fit multiple types of rails, as I'm not sure what my next car might be.
