ARB Rear Diff Lockers on D3

Looking in to adding a diff locker to my D3. Anyone done this and did it make a difference or is the Terrain Response sufficient for undulating/frame twister loose steep climbs?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

From what I have read elsewhere on the internet it is very involved to add a locking rear diff and from my own experience terrain response is terrific (managed to drag me up a muddy slope first time after a defender had taken two or three goes)

A chap in The Discovery Owners Club ( http://lrdoc.lpl-uk.com/ ) retrofitted an Electronic diff from a scrap LR3 and did a write up in their magazine . It was quite involved but all worked properly.

ARB air lockers

Looking to do aftermarket air locker not the factory e-locker. Wondering if anyone has experience with that and if it improved offroad performance

ARB Rear Locker Indstalled

So given that I didn't get much feedback on this topic, I went ahead and bit the bullet.

Installed the ARB pneumatic rear differential locker and tested it on steep, loose and uneven terrain. You definitely notice a difference in the vehicle's ability to climb uneven terrain with lockers engaged.

With Terrain Response only, climbing is a bit notchy where the wheels need to spin a bit before TR kicks in. So it becomes a cycle of loosing traction then regain it.

In contrast, with rear differential locked, climbing becomes much smoother with hardly any noticeable wheel spin. It almost is like cheating. Makes the vehicle more like a point and steer as long as you are smooth on the throttle.

Overall, I really like the performance of locker rear differential and is well worth the investment if you do technical offroading.

No there is no model for the rear of D4 but model number RD 217 may fit the front.

Nice for straight line driving lol
I don’t know the answer and I can’t see what difference it makes, the Toyota hilux with traction control and rear diff lock from the factory. If you lock the rear diff the traction control switches off? If this is required anyone know why? Personally I would think if the traction control can’t see a spinning wheel it wouldn’t operate

As you indicated - in the LR TC stays on and at the wheels does not activate as it sees the wheels turning at the same speed. However remember the TC system also activates on the CDL as well so if rear wheels had traction and the both front wheels did not have traction drive transfers to the rear wheels.

I would not pay any attention to what happens in a Hylux - they are so far behind in technology its not funny. Who switches off the whole traction control system just because you have activated the rear diff lock - nonsense.

Appreciate this post is a couple of years old now, but wanted to get your feedback on how the Front and rear air lockers have been for you? Has it been worth your while getting both lockers fitted vs just the rear? Any issues you’ve had over the time you had this set up.

TIA
