“Shark fin” erm, what does it do???

Hi folks, I have a glass roof, it has a shark fin, it’s loose, one wire / cable going into the grommet has snapped.
What’s it for??? Do I need it??
I’ve read antenna, GPS, GSM?? Mobile phone antenna etc.

Would appreciate a speedy reply as I’m mid way sticking it back on before I go out but would rather just remove it if not needed! Sorry if that sounds rude.

It was used for GSM as the GPS is in the High level brake light.

Had the same thought when looking at the roofline of newer RRs etc. Why two fins? Spatial Diversity, WiFi MIMO, style(ha!)?

Interesting to read the GPS is in the brake light. Have sometimes wondered why they don't integrate the info from the GPS to feed the clock and provide speed in the Map screen. Probably because it's a seventeen year old system!

New RRs have two, because the other one houses the camera for the faux digital rearview mirror (ClearSight). Unfortunately, for design reasons they include an empty dummy fin if you didn't opt for the digital mirror.
