Not sure if it’s possible to do, but would be cool to go and have a poke around at Patriot Campers. I think they are close to Brisbane

Hmmm Cairns to Brisbane - in December in the rainy season - combined with a few cyclones.
Expect to be couped up in your RV for quite a bit of time - 4 rug rats in a camper in the pouring rain - hmmm that has gotta be a lot of fun.
Queensland - Beautiful one day, raining the next - should make you feel right at home

Australia Zoo near Brisbane.
But wrong time of year for Cairns ? (hot + jellyfish + rain)
We’ve got a week in Cairns - kids being looked after by rellies whilst we head out on a live aboard for 4 days, 17 yrs since we were last out there.
Have time in Perth before that then a week just outside Sydney. Long story to origins of trip & why we’re going at that time of yearPaul.

Cairns is lovely. We stayed in Port Douglas, a little north of Cairns. Lots of tourist things to do, we occupied a week there before heading to Brisbane and Byron Bay (on a plane).
It was August when we went, so weather was perfect, not too hot, and dry. Great Barrier Reef was spectacular. We didn't dive, but flew over in a chopper.

We were there for 6 weeks last time, used Cairns as a base so got to know it fairly well, though i’m Sure it’s changed a lot, our 1st dive trip was outer & ribbon reefs up to Lizard Island & a low level flight back which was fun, using the same company on the trip to come, also did a live aboard out to the Coral Sea.
Also planning to stop at Townsville & dive on The Yongala again.
Other than Mission Beach, Australia Zoo & Fraser Island we’ve nothing planned in for the road trip, hence requesting input.Paul.

Paul, get yourself signed up on AULRO forum. They gave us a lot of advice, information, places to visit and invites to stay at their places when we did our Australian trip.
Local knowledge is best knowledge.

Ok. Major points of interest in the PD area for us were the Daintree rain forest, and Cape Trubulation.
Daintree has an amazing glass bottomed cable car ride over the canopy of the jungle to a town at the top. There was an excellent zoo there, saw loads.
Cape Tribulation was a good few miles north of PD. It was where Captain Cook broke his boat apparently, hence the name. Again, plenty of wildlife and things to see on the way. We took a boat trip along the river, saw a few big crocs! It was a bit rural so wet season might be difficult to get there?
Locals will know more, but without 4x4 couldn’t get any further north. We had a Toyota Camry hybrid hire car so were forbidden to go on unmettled roads
