Australian Service Cost

Ok, I'm sitting down now with a nice cup of tea, and I've almost stopped shaking. Our friendly Land Rover Dealer in Adelaide had just quoted me $475.00 to do the 36,000km service on the D3!

Now, I'm not totally mechanically illiterate, nor am I predisposed to donate large sums to starving car sellers, so I was more than a little stunned to be asked for this much to change the oil and fit a new filter. For the record, previous material charges have been:

Filter $14.85
Plug, oil drain $ 9.09
Magnatec SP $73.60
W'shop materials $9.35
Screen Wash $2.95
Toxic Waste Disposal $4.50
TOTAL $114.34

Which leaves $360.66 to cover labor and a quick wash. Blind Freddy and his dog should be able to despatch this job in about an hour, so, allowing for the less than lightning-like pace of their workshop, we can say 1.5 hours. A pretty high labor rate then; I have not seen many of their mechanics driving FFRRs, so I guess the bulk of this goes to the dealership.

The Australian spec. 36,000km service is an "A" service, the bare basic one. I was charged $365.00 for the first "A" service, at 12,000km., and I cannot imagine how it has risen by $110.00 in 8 months!

I am interested in finding what other LRA dealers are charging. As a benchmark, my local Nissan dealer asks for around $200.00 for a similar (10,000km interval) service for a Patrol.

Tony,

I can't tell you how much I paid for the 36K or 18 month service but it does seem too expensive because in 6 months time you will be up for a major 48K or 2 year service which will cost $650-$700 for the service including routine parts and if you need brake pads and disc machining then expect to pay a lot more.

With most cars I've had the 2 year service is usually the first big one (big $'s to)

I'd be questioning the price for a routine A service.

Tony - We here in Sydney are also suffering - my first service; oil and fluid change = $240 and labour = $280. Like I was telling a head hunter, the reason I am charging the rates I am is because of my exorbitant expenses!! With the petrol jumping 10 cents /litre today, you can rely on diesel also soaring upwards very soon. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I just got hit $929 today for a 48k service, no additional work, no brakes - $385 labour, $171 parts, $285 POL plus GST, hence the reason I previously queried other service centres in Perth.

The dealer came back late yesterday with a 'revised' offer of $366 - justified it with a vague statement about having to download the data from the computer....

Now, to be fair, the dealer has a big investment in premises, staff training and equipment (Don't know abour LR, but some European makers insist that they supply the computers already loaded with the software, at a very inflated price and as well, charge an annual license fee of many tens of thousands, plus of course, charges for updates!)

So the dealer can recover the costs by either charging the customer a very high price, increasing the volume of work through the shop or by raising the efficiency of the employees. LR's pathetic sales figures rule out option 2, the ingrained attitude of dealer principals and managers to workshops rules out option 3, and the customer gets hit to leg. The customer's option is to go elsewhere, an option I intend to take up. The LR dealer will still do the major service, (and the regular visits for warranty fixes!!) but in between, the local corner garage will be just as capable of screwing out a sump plug and replacing a filter - and hopefully, the sump plug - as the bloke in the city.

It's a pity that the complex computerised vehicles do not offer any savings in running cost!

My 24K TDV6 service (from a "friendly" dealer on Sydney's lower North Shore) was $630 + GST.

Plug $11.77
Filter $34.14
Detergent $2.55
Pollen Filter $75.74
Castrol fMX MAG 15W40 $117.59
Consumables $18
Waste Levy $10

Labour $360

My guess is that the labour charge equates to 3 hours!

A friendly girl then rang me a few days after the service to see if everything was ok. I remarked at how expensive it was but it didn't sound like she was going to write that down in a report.

Has anyone noticed how...

there is no single oil used by LR Australia dealerships?

In other cars with all-alloy motors, it is always good form to use the one type of oil after run-in. This is so the gaskets sealing the parts stay consistent - as it is thought that changing oil can make gaskets shrink and start oil leaks.

It seems nearly all quotes I have seen mention using various types of Castrol oil. Hopefully they are all compatible with each other when blend du jour is replaced by another.

Cheers,
Rob

Yippee. A C service for the price of an A service?
I've had 12k & 24k service from the dealer I purchased the car from. Both under $380.00. 12k=~$190, 24k=~$378.
Waiting for the 48k though Thud $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I always ask "How much?" when I book the Disco in for servicing and have been told a figure slightly higher than the total 1st time and slightly lower 2nd time.
They have still got Me, well until they break the rules anyway.

Service costs

Tony, I just had the 36k service done and it was $220 Laughing I have had Disco's since 1994 and always found the dealers in Adelaide very reasonable, in fact cheaper than the same Toyota services. However I was away in Darwin for 3 years and on return the costs had risen dramatically. When I queried the LR dedaler I was quoted $350-$400 for the 36k. One of the guys in the RR club said go to Millicent as he was charged $200 for 36K. I rang them and Port Lincoln and was quoted $200. From memeory the Adelaide dealer said their hourly rate was $96 + GST. I reckon this is because Ford is broke and pushing up the rates Censored It will be interesting to see what happens as the 2 local dealers are giving away the LR contract but will still do servicing and parts.

Probably got more to do with both Dealerships being owned by the one Company/person, Gary. But as you suggest, this may not be a permanent arrangement. We can only hope that any changes will be an improvement Exclamation

Being a manager of business using fitters and owning a workshop, from my experience $96 / hr may not unreasonable. With compliance costs, cost of buildings and infrastructure the recovery costs are now sky high. The labour cost is now only a minor part of driver of costs.
I don't like paying $100+ / hr for service but .................
