if it concerns you why not bridge out the switch between the manual on and auto on so it will perform the manual function in either spot.

CW - I think we need to remember that darrind doesn't really have the right to complain that his automatic lights don't work because his D3 has never had them and therefore hasn't paid for them either.... 
I think that everyone was just trying to say that the auto-lights are not really a good enough 'feature' to worry about trying to retrofit them at a later date.
Anyway...back to business 
For the auto-lights to work, you need to have the correct light-switch fitted, which I guess you already have. Assuming that the wiring is common and therefore that you have the cables in place which go from the connector on the back of the switch to the CJB, then you're off to a good start 
The next bit gets difficult. The autolights work using the light/rain sensor in the inside-top of the windscreen - I'm guessing that you don't have this fitted, so you'd need this (and possibly a new windscreen??).
This light sensor communicates with the CJB via the LIN bus to tell it when the ambient light levels drop sufficiently to turn on the lights.
Therefore you'd need (in addition to the switch), a light sensor, LIN bus wiring and also you'd (probably) need the CJB software updating/enabling so that the auto-function works.
It doesn't sound impossible, but sounds bloody difficult to me

wasnt referring to darrind or the original post from APG but those that do get the old "use your fingers" and "I just do this" type of remark that isnt very helpful to those asking just like those that mod their vehicle in a way others would think weird and never actually get what they need, been happening alot lately around here, that was my point.

Anyway APG - the answer is the same for you. If you are going to get a new switch to be able to wire up the fog lights, just make sure you get the one with the Auto position (just in case there are a few options). That way, you'll be part way there 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Sorry Bodsy , but these are wrong 
As Paul said its the sensor in the windscreen that does the automatic stuff....so unless he has a windscreen with these fitted it will be an expensive retrofit ( windscreen £857 ...) ...and theres no guarantee the wiring is going to be in place .
And just for reference ..the little sensor on the speaker housing at the front of the dash is the "solar sensor" Purpose is to accomodate changes in the sunlight by altering the cool air bypass flap position , thus allowing more cool air into the vehicle.
One on the dash , below the LCD display is the ambient light sensor . G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Thanks for all your replies...
So essentially I had better stop being lazy and switch the lights on manually or it's going to cost a fortune for something that may or may not work, and even if it does work it doesn't work that well...!
Shame, I like the auto lights in the Merc.
Will stick with the fog lights only option then.
We do get a lot of low cloud up here in the hills but I'm afraid my main motivation is aesthetics rather than functional necessity...

Auto lights on the D3 are cack, and the same applies to the auto wipers 
I've have then, but chose not to use them as you cannot adjust when the kick in, and stop.

Nothing wrong with that....I always think that the D3 doesn't quite look 'right' without the fog lights.
Here in Spain it is a very common modification to add the fog lights onto S models - I know a lot of people that have done it and retrofitting them looks as good as factory-fitted ones 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I did'nt think all the various spec'd D3's had the light sensors inside the motor, the one's that trigger the Auto headlamps. So if you bought an Auto enabled light switch I would imagine without the interior ambient light sensor it would be no good.
I think this has been discussed before regarding up - spec a lower spec model. Some things can be done, and some cannot. If you wanted ALL the toys maybe a HSE should have been on the shopping list, and I guess LR did'nt intend this either.

Not everyone can afford to buy an HSE mate, although recent market influences have brought the used market down a fair bit, but with 25-30k to spend on a car the choice would be an old HSE or a relatively new lower spec. Sometimes the old car with the toys is just not a serious option for a few extra gadgets which 'maybe' can be added later. There is not a lot that can not be retro-fitted as has been proven on here.
