I would be asking how they managed to do that.

They said because it was rusted?

stiff gear shift

Hello Gents
another seemingly inevitable fix needed to the D3 - A couple of questions prior to doing the job:-

1. Having been sold a new lever only when I thought I was getting a "kit" I thought I would try to oil/lube the linkage prior to getting the other parts. Things might be slightly free-er but I still have fairly reasonable resistance from Park to Reverse and a definite ping/bump to get it across. Could something be bent that the linkage change wont fix or is this part and parcel of a seized pivot?

2. Someone previously mentioned (without response) parking sensors coincidently failing at the same time. I have this problem - long beep on ignition, sometimes an erratic beep on engaging reverse but all the time not working (from a while ago now anyway). Is there any connection with the gear shift not being in the right place or should I resign myself to a bumper off/loom change as my next job?

Oh and a third question - should the undercover have insulation and there be a heat shield as I found neither (just a load of crud blocking a couple of drain holes in the cover so prob made moisture/corrosion worse). I have a 57 plate 08 model D3 HSE

Many thanks
Steve H

Steve

Me thinks, but doesn't know for sure, that if the lever isn't going far enough and with the inertia of the gearbox dropping it out of gear, then maybe the parking sensors, which must be connected in some software way, will be hit and miss.
I, like you had a go at lubing the shaft where the plastic insert is and it did improve 'the feel' but it still dropped out of gear when cornering.
The replacement 'kit' did the job properly and I haven't had another problem.

Best

Ian

Thanks Ian
I realise it was yourself that had the pig sensor issue at the same time
Are you saying that the new linkage solved this problem for you without needing loom change ?
Regards
Steve

"pig sensor" (pkg sensor) - predictive text attack - quite apt tho!

Update

Parts arrived to go with the leaver. came to do job and can't budge the top nut. Even though it's been soaked with lube for a few days
I don't want to force it and shear the spindle like previous post
I'm forcing the cable rod end towards the front end when I try to release it

Any tips? Anti clockwise right? (Just checking it not LH thread or something like the fan hub I'm also battling with for an alternator replacement)

Many thanks to Geof for the advice.
Top tips on nut removal (sure my new gas soldering tool/mini blow torch will help get the pivot lever nut off when I get around to it)

However the viscous fan has beat me - heat, oil, wrench and also proper viscous fan spanner used to no avail. Snapped screw driver / spanner and scredriver dropped into engine bay / tried whacking the spanner many times (one time taking a tip off the fan blade! Doh!)
D3 winched onto back of lorry last night and off to LR indie in Wellingborough. Pretty frustrating when the job is seemingly so straightforward only to be held up for ages or beaten by a seized nut standing in the way.

Anyway, my question - will the fan operate ok with one tip busted off? Can you get hold of a viscous fan blade only?

update

Just spotted that the LR indie busted another tip off the viscous fan right next to the one I did!
(spotted while changing out a split turbo/intercooler hose - jeeez the jobs just keep coming!! Censored )

How will 2 missing tips affect the performance of the fan - any knock-on issues?

If anyone knows where I can get a new viscous fan blade only rather than the whole coupling it would be appreciated. God forbid having to go back and try and get the fan off again but will have to sooner or later as should have changed the belt really when new alternator was put in - false economy but too many jobs and just need the car running...which it is now having completed at least one job myself thanks to this forum Bow down (intercooler pipe - easy I know Whistle )

Hi guys, new member here. My dad is having issues with his RRS which has led me to this page, he is having slightly different symptoms, Occasionally when selecting 'D' it seems to 'lunge' into gear rather than being smooth, likewise it is sometimes not possible to remove from D without turning ignition off and back on, When he has the fault it is showing up gearbox fault and P0915. Does this sound like it could be selector/pivot issues? for the price of the parts and whats involved I am going to replace them anyway but just trying to find as much info as possible as I am away with work at the moment.

Great guide! Many thanks.

Started to find pulling away from junctions, it would drop out of drive momentarily. Ordered kit from Advanced Factors. Then an hour (taking my time) to do it all.

The answers about the sticking gear shift were spot on. Thank you very much, very pleased to have very easily solved this problem solely due to advice from this site.

I am wondering if this is causing my issue. My symptoms aren't exactly the same, i.e. the gear selector doesn't drop out of drive. But, my selector has been stiff for some time and now I am interminttently experiencing a lack of drive. Mostly just after cornering or pulling away from a junction. I also noticed that when I was at a junction on a hill, the car started to roll back indicating drive wasn't correctly engaged. Whenever I have a lack of drive, I can still hear and see the engine rev as I depress the accelerator.

Does this sound to you guys like it could be the same issue? Or would the selector have to be dropping back to neutral?

Thanks
