Offroad rules
Just because a footpath is wide enough for your Land Rover to squeeze along, it doesn't necessarily follow that you should - or that you're allowed to. In fact, the rules and regulations are quite complicated.
They're also full of acronyms, such as RUPP (road used as a public path) and BOAT (byway open to all traffic). The situation has been further confused by some recent law changes, which have shifted the goalposts again.
Put very simply, the only thing you're totally safe driving on is a BOAT - but even these can be seasonal.
Footpaths and bridleways - if that's really all they are - are no-go areas. The best advice is to join a local club via the Green Lane Association, which campaigns to protect historic rural routes and promotes sensible off-roading. Its website is www.glass-uk.org and you can contact regional associations via that.
Most sensibly minded people would know this of course but its refreshing to see AE print something non-sensationalising.
