If you not going to change the filter, I reckon you could do a DIY mega flush.

I purchased 20 litre of Fuchs ATF, it had readable increments on the side to see the volume left in the container,

You could run a length of 1/2" tube from the new atf fluid container to the radiator nipple, and from
The disconnected rubber ATF line connect some 1/2" tubing to an empty 20 litre drum.

Turn the car on and the new oil will be sucked into the cooler, while the old oil is deposited into the waste drum, when the oil changes colour from black to the new atf fluid colour, turn the engine off

Then remove the plug from the side of the transmission and topup with fluid.

Surely this is the easiest and most obvious method.....can anyone tell me why this isn’t the best way to ensure all old old is removed?

I can't see the point of flushing the system out and not changing the filter-you wouldn't drain and refill the engine and not fit a new filter would you ?? Whistle Big Cry

If the oil that comes out of the Autobox is dirty, then the filter element is in the same state and given that the box service intervals are say every 75000 miles and the internal components are more intricate than the engine, it's a no brainer.

If the steel sump kit is fitted it makes future replacement of the gearbox filter easy.

One of the worst things they did was to do away with the Autobox dipstick/filler tube and change to an enclosed unit..at least you could check the oil level and just as important the colour of the fluid.

Me neither. I intend to flush with 10 litres, change the filter then push another 10 through, with a couple of Dr Trannys for good measure.

I flushed about 10 Lts through until it was crystal clear then went underneath and removed the original sump pan, filter and plastic sleeve. Fitted the replacement steel sump pan, filter and sleeve.
Filled the box through the cooler connection with new fluid & 2 X Dr Tranny mix using a garden pressure sprayer with the spray nozzle removed from the gun. From memory, put about 5 1/2 Lts. in which was how much came out before I started putting the flush through. refitted the hose to the cooler. Removed the fill plug on the box, started the engine and let it idle until the gearbox was warm then topped up through the fill hole until it seeped out and refitted the plug. Job done Thumbs Up

The plastic sleeve where the cables come through from the interior of the box to the exterior multi pin connector (Next to the selector cable lever) should be changed as it is prone to leaking past it's "O" ring.

and finally

1 x Gearbox Filter Kit Easy Change ZF6HP (Britpart) LR007474 DA2142 £54.99

Last two items were ordered from Island 4 X 4

Due to the filthy state of the oil removed from the autobox, I finished up ordering a further 10 litres of fluid (20 Lts in total) to ensure that the system was totally clean before refilling. I reckon I have about 3 Lts left over which equates to approx. 9LTs for the flush alone. You may be lucky and use less with the flush but I wanted to be 100% sure that all the cr*p had been removed and didn't finish the flush until the fluid was coming through as clean as a whistle before changing the pan & filter and adding the Dr Tranny.
The box is super smooth and has been since doing the job over 10K miles ago. Total cost seems expensive but I am certain that what I did is as good as a Flush by using an automatic machine, if not better for less money.
My advice is, don't scrimp on the flush, keep going until you are sure all the muck has been flushed, dirt and contamination are the nemesis of complex hydraulic systems-cut corners at your peril Whistle

By the way my Disco has done 176000 and is running as sweet as a nut... no oil pump failures, no broken crank or slipped bearing shells. No canbus issues etc. just normal wear & tear items, e.g. Heater matrix, rear propshaft support bearing, rear suspension arm bushes and links, fuel filter housing connectios (Spurious Water in Fuel message).EPB module rebuild (£30 for a set of new gears)
