Neil Pettersen recommends taping over some of the sensor area. Must admit, I haven't got round to trying it yet. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Mine seems to have a mind of there own. I picked up the car from new about 5 weeks ago, my lights are always off at dusk (when almost everyone else's are on) I end up switching to manual as I feel they should be on due to light levels, but then today on a trip up the M1 to Leicester and back they were on and off all the time when only a very few cars had there's on. On a mission to find the perfect Pork Pie. Just Found it (I think)..(Yes I have)

Glad to read that I'm not the only one who's unhappy with the sensitivity. As an IT-guy I'm sure there is an elegant way to settle this, but does the dealer know how to do it ?
@JF Lux : Have you already tried at the local dealer in Luxembourg ? If yes, was it helpful ?

It can be done. My wife's Volvo V50 wipers work perfectly on automatic and you can adjust the sensitivity like you do it with the interval stand.
Lights? The lights on a Volvo are always on.
But I will have a look when I have my D3 Roel

So I noticed yesterday that after starting my return journey in a multi-story car park, the LR3 automatically put on my lights in the dark garage area as expected - but then kept them on all the way home!
It was 6 pm and still light - is this normal? 08 LR3 SE V8 - 02 D2 SE7 V8

Depends on the light conditions you had at 6 PM. If it was light and bright, it is certainly not normal. Sure the lights weren't in manual mode ? (just a thought) Claude

The light sensor measures the light levels in both the vertical and horizontal planes. If it sees that there is little light coming from above then it will probably assume that the sun is low in the sky and that it's nearly dusk....thereby sticking the lights on for you....
However 6pm in California in August??? Not exactly time for the sun to go down is it?
Was it overcast at the time? This may have affected things as the overall ambient light level would have dropped...

Well, I felt that it was bright - i.e. still sunny - but the car didn't agree!
The lights were definitely in auto mode, they did switch off when I got home.
Didn't know the car had multi sensors (horizontal and vertical) so if it's smart enough to know it's late in the day then I'm good with that - lot's of cars in CA have running lights any way  08 LR3 SE V8 - 02 D2 SE7 V8

I've never really had a problem with them... they come on when it's dark and go off when it's light.
But... I have to revert to manual if it's raining heavily during the day (which is pretty much every day during a British 'summer')  As you slide down the banister of life

I have A TDV6 HSE in Taiwan ,have the same problem , compare to others , it sense to turn on the light is much much slow.

I've given up with mine - I go through a number of tunnels on the way to and from work - the lights come on in the 1st tunnel then go off when exiting it. They come on when entering the 2nd tunnel and then stay on irrespective of exiting the tunnel into bright sunshine. The Stealer's looked at this twice and not fixed it.

Ok so here's a strange twist to my post back in Aug ...
6 months ago i had a new instrument pack installed which altererd the sensitivity of my headlights to come on immediately when i enter a tunnel and off when I exit (even when driving under a bridge!) it also changed the sensitivity of my rear aprking sensors so that they only started beeping when approx 30cm from an object. Downright annoying especially when reversing quickly....
So last week I noticed that my lights didn't come on immediately when i went under a bridge and coincidentally my rear sensors came on about 1m away from an object!. this change occured all my itself and with no interaction with dealer... I've not serviced the car, disconnected battery or anything else remotely to do woth the elctronics. In fact the car has been great keeping itslef on the road!. I'm stuffed if I know what's happened, but I don't want it to change back... Now my lights come on after about 5secs in a tunnel and my sensors behave perfectly .... And they will until the car with a mind of it's own decides otherwise... 
Does anyone have any idea? What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

| Auto Headlight Sentivity Issue Resolved |

For the first four months of ownership I had the same frustrations with the lack of automatic headlight sensitivity as mentioned herein and normally ended up using manual control as the system was far too late in switching the lights on.
Since my vehicle had its first service two months ago the problem has been resolved such that the lights are now on before I would normally reach for the switch. We had an extreme test recently with short torrential downpours in almost black conditions mixed with brilliant sunny spells and the lights worked absolutely perfectly on and off. It is also much faster in switching on when entering a covered area such as garage or tunnel.
I therefore wonder if there has been an upgrade to the control system to address the problem?

I haven't a clue as the vehicle (2008.5 XS) simply had its first service and there were no faults to rectify.
It was only a few weeks back that my wife commented that the auto lights were working much better than previously which is what I had already noticed. The only change is that the car had a service but I remember the service reception mentioning a software upgrade. Nothing unusual is mentioned on the invoice.
In driving out early one morning recently with bright sunshine at a low angle with some dark shade I was most surprised to find the lights were already on whereas previously it would definitely have required manual over-ride.
