Autoroutes, bikes and tolls!
Hi peeps,
We've just returned from three weeks in France shed-dragging! Going out, we had our bikes on the roof bars. After we'd paid the first couple of tolls, I thought how much they'd gone up. At the third I noticed that we were being charged at Class 4 (the same as artics etc!). As all of the toll booths were automated there appeared little that we could do.
Coming back, we put the bikes inside the car, and low and behold, all the tolls were charged correctly at Class 2.
For information only for anyone going over the water in the near future.
Nigel.

Wondering if the same would apply to a D3 with a roof box...
Don't think we were charged class 4 last year when we went over - but we hadn't a toll thing then so went in manned boothsMark.

Deffo not charged anything other than a standard car when driving D3 with CB whip in place. With a tag if course, the only way to do it.

I thought that a Disco with roof box is a standard car charge ie Class 1, I am sure that is what is charged when we go down using the Sanef Tag!

Yes, with the bikes on it's over 3 metres high. Without, the max height is 2.6 metres (caravan). This year, of all the tolls we went through, only one was "manned", the rest are "self-service" so to speak.

Just done what I should have done before we went and researched a little!
It would appear that 3m height is the cut-off point, so under that is Class 2, over is Class 4.

just had email back from sanef tolling confirming roof box and bikes on the D4 will be classified as class 1, class 2 with the caravanD4 Fuji White HSE with Black Pack, TV, RSE, Tow Pack, Side Steps & Heated Steering Wheel
our toll prices have always been the same whether we have had bikes and roof box on or nothing - presume from above that it is class 1D4 2010 HSE Santorini Black
D3 2005 SE Java Black - p/x to D4
D2 2001 GS - p/x to D3

I'm sure that technically it is, BUT the problem is that most of the tolls that we came across were not "manned", and therefore with the bikes on the roof (just over 3m high), they must have triggered something to classify them as Class 4, and you can't talk to a machine.
We've never had a problem in the past when tolls were "manned", or without the bikes on the roof.
Checking the SANEF site (including the tag) it does state that vehicles under 2m are Class 1, and between 2m and 3m are Class 2. Therefore, be careful if the bikes take the overall height over 3m as you're likely to be charged at a higher rate. I have contacted SANEF and am awaiting a response.

Reply from Sanef asking about roof boxes and bike racks
Dear Mr Gabb
Please use the non-height restricted Liber-t lane, not the 2 meter lane.
To ensure you are not mis-classed as class 2 just hand your tag over in the manual lane or press the intercom in the Liber-t lane.
If you find any class 2 tolls on your invoice please contact us so we can request a toll adjustment (takes 1-2 months to correct)
Kind regards
