Off to the Alps in March and have snow chains as per legal requirement etc.. However they are a real pain to fit and remove for short distances so am looking at the Autosocks for their ease of use. Look like a good light duty alternative when it gets a bit slippy. Also decent value (if they work) at £65.
Anyone used them on the Disco - or are they not much more use than decent tyres and the Snow TR programme?
Cheers

I've got a set, they live in the boot of my wifes Saab convertible. Never actually needed to use them but they came highly recommended by a Scandinavian friend.
As you say though, not really meant to be a replacement for chains, more a solution to get you going when you're stuck on a hill etc.

Just got back from Switzerland, we'd rented an A4 quattro with winter tyres (225/55-R16 Klebers, too wide), and managed fine. Our 'Chalet neighbours' rocked up in RR on OEM Pirelli Scorpions, and didn't seem to have any problems, can only presume they used snow settings; we were at the end of the road, and there was a lot of fresh snow falling last week (more than a metre), so I reckon you'd be fine with a set of socks for emergencies. son of less tech-literate 2007 LRD3 owner (unmodified 'arctic frost' TDV6 HSE auto)

the socks are actually very very good, they work on same principal as skins on touring ski's you just have to trust them.
we tested them back to back against chains on a volvo xc70 on a piste for a magasine and the socks went just as far as the chains, the slope went upto 22 degrees so it was a good test..

As far as I know, socks aren't considered to be "chains", so wouldn't cover the legal requirement. However, M+S tyres are normally allowed in place of chains.
