No I live here, and chose to live here. I assume you've never actually spent any significant time up here. Your impressions are plain wrong, certainly from where I live. This year we've had a better winter than most of the UK, certainly warmer, and we don't get midgies in this part of the Highlands As for rain, we tend to get less than most of the UK as the west coast takes most of it. Good to see you've dismissed all the people's up here as rude based on you obviously having met the whole population of Inverness, and obviously they are all rude. No I don't look at up here through any tints, I could live anywhere but chose here.

Got to agree with DSL here, tis indeed a very beautiful part of the world. As a family we spend a lot of time in the Aviemore / Inverness / Speyside area usually with the tintent and always look forward to our next trip. We are usually fortunate with the weather but have the clothing to still allow us to do what we want to do regardless. Midges not a problem and the people tend to treat you as you treat them
We've never had a problem.
I'd live there too if I could right now, and probably will in time. We feel lucky that we're only 2 hours away.
We're off to the lakes for our annual Easter trip and never have an issue there either. Lovely part of England!

Sorry to hear that you are so disillusioned, and yes I agree of course, that places are different to live in than visit. I was talking about the Speyside area more than further North, but we love the West too, I stayed in Cromarty (and Kishorn) for a while when the yard was working and it was really nice (people too) at that time too.
Surely, can't be that bad or you would have bailed by now? Or are you in Cheshire nowadays?
Hopefully things look a bit better in the spring ......................

Lost the thread a wee bit considering scoff was the original subject. We moved from JHQ Rheindahlen, Germany in Aug 2007 (renal failure) but didn't want to return to Angleterre. So Jockland was our choice (I speak Jockinese learned in the Mess Bars of The Queens Own Highlanders, The Black Watch and Royal Scots (Okay not in order of seniority) over many, many years, many, many pints and all things alcoholic, especially Drambuie.
We bought a lovely house in a lovely spot in Alloa. Very, very occasionally there would be some pillock spouting about that lot south of the border, which you just ignored, and yes I do support Scotland when England aren't playing which isn't universally reciprocated but other than that........a great place to live. Warm, generous people, both civilian and Armed Forces.
I moved from Scotland to North Notts because of family (Cancer and kidney failure) support . Now live in a s**thole of an old pit village (I was born in one but escaped). We detest it! So, my wife donated a kidney (my family couldn't be seen for dust!), all clear on the cancer (Prostate. My advice? Let your GP stick a finger up your bum if you are of a certain age....better to be safe etc.) and we are now planning to move........back to Scotland!
It's a fine place to live except for the lack of cod in the chippies!!
