B pillar ticking
Morning all,
My 2008 Discovery 3 has developed a ticking noise over the last few weeks, which is loud and constant enough to really degrade the driving experience (it's right in my ear!!). It sounds like it's coming from around the B-pillar, possibly up high near the seat belt housing but I can't be sure though as noise travels. I've applied pressure to various areas around the top of the B pillar and neighbouring door cards and nothing seems to silence the ticking.
I've seen similar threads about B Pillar rattles on 12MY+ Disco 4s but nothing too similar on my generation. Has anyone had anything similar or can recommend places I should look??
It's driving me insane unless I have the audio volume up loud (even then I still hear the tick-tick-tick at times!)

Had something similar on the off-side B pillar.
Turned out it was the door seals at pillar level.
Just gave them a squeeze in and it was sorted.
(Might've, been the trim that was rattling due to not being held firmly in place by the seal).
Might not be of use, but worth a try at least. 🏴

Still struggling with this one guys...
Almost sounds like it's coming from the window frame by the B pillar... ticking away like a creaky chassis frame... but I can't isolate it or stop it with my hand. The seals don't seem to affect it. Any other thoughts?2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

Is it only when you drive over a few bumps as I had similar instance more of a rattle than ticking I checked all over the door as it sounded like it was coming from the seat belt feed but it turned out to be an item in the boot rattling against the side plastic in the boot. Worth a look as I’d never have thought it as it sounded so closeMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)

There was a TSB about this - need to search the forum. It is in the stickies under General D4!!!!.

It's amazing how sounds can fool you to their origin. I swore it was the nearside rear B pillar & spent hours stripping everything down on or around it & diligently putting it back only to find the creak / squeak was still there. In the end I narrowed it down to the locking pin on the nearside lower tailgate pin. It was dry & creaking. a bit of lithium grease & I've not heard it since.

Been well covered before..... including by me! 43,000 plus views and 67 replies on this site.
I'm waiting for mine to start ticking again.... once the outside temperature reaches 15 degrees and the atmospheric conditions are 'right'...
There is no cure it appears ..... despite it going back to LR and having the TSB - new bolts etc, etc...2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

I've had my D4 for only a few weeks but the ticking from the B pillar has started. Stripped the flimsy cover panel and after a few trial and error efforts managed to replicate the tick by pressing on or near the spot weld below the lower seat belt anchor fixing. So its definately to do with that. Cant see any sign of the technical bulletin for welding having been done but the flimsy cover panel is dated 6.16 whereas mine is a 7.15 build. So someone has had a look at it before.
So, a diligent tap with a hammer and big screwdriver in the hole just below that spot weld, and another opening next to the bottom of the belt fixing appears to have sorted it for now. Looks like a very slight bit of flex around the defective spot weld is enough to allow movement of metal on metal... and thats the culprit. Separate the metal by the tiniest margin and the ticking has gone away.
Now i need a new lot of the yellow plastic fixings for the flimsy cover panel....

Any chance of taking a piccie of the areas you applied the 'fix' to please? and what are the yellow fixings needed - I take it the cover can't be taken off without breaking them? 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

Yes I'll take a few pics tomorrow and post them with an update on whether its really fixed. I have a 120 mile round trip tomorrow - should be enough of a test.
The yellow clips can be re-used, I just didnt align the cover piece properly before trying to refit it, Also its worth peeling back the door seals first as they help to hold it all together

Sound can be awful to trace as it not only travels but echos also, I would not confine your search to the “B” pillar, look in the door glove box for instance, check inside the rearmost cup carrier, I once had this problem for weeks in a different vehicle I finally found it, it was a parking ticket in the door jamb
The pillar trim is very easy to remove and check inside as a last resort, it just pulls off ISTR.It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Really annoying ticking noise I suffered from in the D4 was a sycamore seed in the lower window glass meets door bit, back towards the B pillar. Easy to sort once I saw it but difficult to see at speed and silent otherwise.

Well on my way to work, I had no more ticking, so I reckon I have cured this one, on to the next rattle, probably kids sweeties down the seats or in the rear storage or something
