Back with an updated D4 2016 and first issue..

I love the D3 and the D4 and this is my third car...

One week in Rolling with laughter

Service required notification" comes on the dash; not a problem, you may say! The problem is the car was serviced at the Main dealer 1500 miles ago by the previous owner for belts, oil, filters, etc. So I called Land Rover up and explained the situation. They said no problem, and we will book the car in for an inspection as it does not need a service. It could be the engine oil quality has dropped! What does that mean? After 1500 miles?? But it will cost £240 for the inspection.
I was going to buy an IID BT Tool Gap Diagnostics G3 further down the line, but I will buy one now after an oil and fluid check and resetting myself

It could be oil quality , known as oil dilution, which is monitored by the car. It happens when the a DPF regent is happening and doesn’t finish the cycle. The additional diesel injected ends up finding its way into the oil if it doesn’t all burn off. This can happen when you do lots of short journeys. However, in my view, this is unlikely to occur in only 1500 miles.
It is much more likely, in my opinion, that the service reset didn’t work properly when it was done 1500 miles ago ( or perhaps not done at all). I have heard that this can happen, the reset not working properly. This happened to me on one occasion whilst the car was under warranty and Land Rover dealer reset again for me at no charge.
One quick investigation you could do that would provide a clue regarding this is to look at when the car was serviced prior to the last service 1500 miles ago. It could be that it was around 12 months from now which might be the last time the reset worked.
Good luck sorting
 Gary

Just checked the history again, the last service was 12 months ago at the MD, and the car has covered 13k in the last year but the last three months were all non-A roads and M roads. All-town driving!

So if I understand you correctly, it was serviced 3m ago when belts etc were changed. And it was serviced before that 12m ago?

Not an expert ,but wouldn’t think 3months Sheep town driving over 1500 miles would be enough to trigger the service required due to oil dilution. Would obviously depend how long journeys were as DPF regens can happen at lower speeds but they take longer. More likely, in my opinion to be the reset from 12m ago expiring and the most recent reset not working.

Having said that, if you do mostly town driving, you may eventually get the service due warning early caused by oil dilution issue. If your oil is currently showing full to highest level and ‘ok’ , then another indication of dilution is that the oil level changes to ‘overfilled’ as the unburnt diesel adds to the volume of oil (this happened on mine). I had an interim oil change (roughly 6 months on) when this happened. So be ready if that is the case.

Cheers

My guess would be the service was not reset at the recent service so the twelve months time has expired and causing service needed. nothing sinister they often forget. They should easily be able to interrogate the system and establish when it was last reset. I would speak to the dealers who carried out that service and if they had neglected to reset the service reminder suggest they pay for the reset. Dont be surprised if they want you to take it to them.

The previous owner didn't extend the LRW it was due in March at the last Service! then decided to sell for a D5, My past experience with the main dealers hasn't been great. Not LR I had issues with BMW but it still leaves a sting! LR was adamant about the £240 inspection cost to be paid. I will go with the GAP G3 re-set and monitor. Doing some research I feel it's the reset has not been completed as well, on the plus side I will have the G3 in my toolbox..

From your comments and feedback generally on this forum, I would say find yourself a good and trusted independent LR specialist in your area and use them.
If you’re not sure who to use, have a search on this forum or put a request for recommendations in your area on the forum and see what responses you get. I did that and found a garage I completely trust and who give the car a thorough once over when the car goes in for a service. It’s peace of mind (relatively speaking!). You’ll also save money.
Good luck

I am reliably informed there is a way to reset the service required notification without any hookup to anything. Of course that won't solve any underlying problem. But I would have thought that if there were to be an underlying problem, the service notification would then rear it's head again.

You might or might not want to consider that.

I would also agree with finding a good Independent. Give Nathan a call at West 4 x 4 and talk through the issue, he is a top, top chap.

This topic has an answer to the question about a good Indy in the Hampshire area. Might be useful for you.

A good Indy is West 4x4

A little bit of a journey from Southampton (I’m just on the east side of Soton) but they’re very reliable.
